Developer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a developer in Virginia?
Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work as a software developer, so the path centers on education and credentials recognized by employers. Most Virginia hiring managers expect at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or information technology, though associate degrees paired with a strong portfolio are competitive for entry roles. For positions with defense contractors in Northern Virginia, obtaining or being eligible for a federal security clearance is often the decisive credential.
How much do developers make in Virginia?
Developers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire developers in Virginia?
Employers hiring developers in Virginia right now include General Dynamics Information Technology, Guidehouse, and Booz Allen Hamilton, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal agencies and defense primes means many of the largest and most consistent hiring employers are government contractors or technology firms with long-term federal contracts.
Which Virginia cities have the most developer jobs?
McLean, Chantilly, and Arlington have the most developer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and commercial cloud infrastructure firms, while Richmond draws from a growing financial technology and corporate IT sector, and Hampton Roads hiring is anchored by military and naval technology employers.
Are there remote developer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of developer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and collaborative nature of software development. Roles in web, application, and cloud development tend to offer the most location flexibility, while positions requiring access to classified systems or secure facilities at Northern Virginia contractor sites are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a developer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior developer role at one of Virginia's large technology employers or government contractors, where many firms run structured new-graduate programs. Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, and SAIC all recruit early-career engineers through campus and rotational programs, and Capital One hires associate software engineers from both four-year and community college backgrounds. Building a portfolio of deployed projects and earning a cloud certification such as AWS Certified Developer strengthens a candidate's profile considerably for Virginia's market.
Where can I find and apply to developer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to developer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings from employers across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
