General Summary
Western Michigan University invites applications for the position of full-time tenure-track position as a Faculty Specialist in Special Education: Learning Disabilities, to start August 2026. The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, and provide service to the university and educational community.
Review of applications will start June 8, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.
Expected start date: August 15, 2026. Start date of January 2027 negotiable.
Major Duties
The essential duties of the position include a combination of teaching, assessment for continuous program improvement, advising, and service to the profession, program, the university, and the community at-large. The faculty member will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in areas such as selecting and implementing evidence-based academic interventions and assessments and provide clinical supervision to special education teacher candidates. It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to establishing regional, statewide, and national visibility for the program, the department, and the university.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned Master’s degree in special education or closely related field from an accredited institution with a clear emphasis in learning disabilities or mild/mild-moderate disabilities.
- A minimum of 3 years of teaching, intervention delivery or direct service experience with students with or at risk for disabilities.
- Demonstrated success supporting the needs of students experiencing academic difficulty.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive education and to meeting the needs of all preK-12 learners.
Desired Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in special education or closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Expertise in the Science of Reading and experience with screening and instruction for dyslexia in K-12 school settings.
- Evidence of being an excellent college-level teacher using multiple instructional modalities, including online, hybrid, and in-person instruction.
- Hold or are eligible to hold a special education teaching license or certificate.
- Experience mentoring or supervising undergraduate or graduate teacher candidates in K-12 field experiences.
- Experience with CAEP, MDE, CEC, or other accreditation standards.
- Evidence of strong collaborations with other faculty on inter-disciplinary teaching research and scholarship.
