For positions requiring a CPA, candidates must meet the education and experience requirements set by the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy and pass the Uniform CPA Examination. Many employers, particularly in energy, agriculture, and healthcare, hire candidates without a CPA license for staff-level roles, with the expectation that licensure will follow.
How much do financial accountants make in North Dakota?
Financial accountants in North Dakota earn a median of about $75,730 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,330 for the lowest 10% to over $124,960 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire financial accountants in North Dakota?
North Dakota financial accountant roles are posted by Intuit, Knife River, and State of North Dakota and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. North Dakota's energy, agricultural cooperative, and healthcare sectors generate consistent demand, making employers in those industries among the most reliable sources of financial accountant openings across the state.
Which North Dakota cities have the most financial accountant jobs?
Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck are the cities with the most financial accountant openings in North Dakota. Fargo anchors the market as the state's largest city and a regional hub for corporate finance and professional services, while Bismarck drives demand through state government, energy companies, and financial institutions headquartered in the capital, and Grand Forks adds openings through its university, healthcare, and agricultural sectors.
Are there remote financial accountant jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, and more than many fields, since financial accounting is largely desk-based and analytical. About 8% of financial accountant openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the role's compatibility with distributed work. Financial reporting, budgeting, and analysis tasks are the functions most frequently offered on a remote or hybrid basis by North Dakota employers.
How can I get hired as a financial accountant in North Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for staff accountant or accounting associate roles at North Dakota's large healthcare systems like Sanford Health or Essentia Health, regional banks like Gate City Bank, or agricultural cooperatives, all of which regularly bring on candidates directly from accounting programs. Completing an internship during your degree at a North Dakota public accounting firm or corporate finance department gives a strong advantage. Candidates who sit for the CPA exam early, even before licensure, signal commitment and move ahead of otherwise comparable applicants.
