How do you become a tax director in North Dakota?
Most tax directors in North Dakota hold a CPA license issued or recognized by the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting the Board's education and experience requirements. Candidates typically start in public accounting or corporate tax roles, build expertise in federal and North Dakota state tax law, and progress through senior accountant and tax manager positions before reaching the director level.
How much do tax directors make in North Dakota?
Tax directors in North Dakota earn a median of about $75,730 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,330 for the lowest 10% to over $124,960 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax directors in North Dakota?
Employers hiring tax directors in North Dakota right now include Intuit, Eide Bailly, and Brady Martz, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. North Dakota's energy production, healthcare, and agricultural cooperative sectors generate the steadiest demand for senior tax leadership.
Which North Dakota cities have the most tax director jobs?
Fargo, Bismarck, and Minot account for the largest share of tax director openings in North Dakota. Fargo drives the most activity as the state's largest business center, home to major healthcare systems and financial institutions, while Bismarck's concentration of state government agencies, utilities, and energy companies supports consistent demand, and Grand Forks adds openings through its university and regional corporate presence.
Are there remote tax director jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 10% of tax director openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the role. Tax compliance, research, and planning functions transfer well to remote arrangements, though roles requiring close coordination with on-site finance teams or executive leadership often favor a hybrid schedule.

The most realistic path is entering through a staff or senior tax accountant role at a North Dakota public accounting firm or a corporate tax department, then building toward a manager title.
