Tax Consultant Jobs in North Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax consultant in North Dakota?
Becoming a tax consultant in North Dakota typically starts with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and passing the CPA exam, with licensure granted through the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy. CPA licensure requires completing the required credit hours, passing all four exam sections, and fulfilling the work experience requirement under a licensed CPA. Some entry-level tax consultant roles are accessible with an accounting degree alone while pursuing licensure, particularly at regional firms.
How much do tax consultants make in North Dakota?
Tax consultants in North Dakota earn a median of about $57,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,080 for the lowest 10% to over $89,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax consultants in North Dakota?
North Dakota tax consultant roles are posted by Intuit, Eide Bailly, and Brady Martz and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Regional public accounting firms headquartered in North Dakota, particularly those serving agriculture, energy, and healthcare clients, are among the most consistent sources of tax consultant openings in the state.
Which North Dakota cities have the most tax consultant jobs?
Fargo, Bismarck, and Minot lead North Dakota in tax consultant openings. Fargo drives the largest share of postings as the state's most populous metro and home to a concentration of regional accounting firms, financial institutions, and healthcare systems, while Bismarck's role as the state capital brings steady demand from government contractors and energy sector employers, and Grand Forks benefits from the University of North Dakota's presence and surrounding professional services activity.
Are there remote tax consultant jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields, since tax consulting is primarily an analytical and document-driven role that translates well to remote work. About 17% of tax consultant openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting both the nature of the work and the state's geographic spread. Individual and business tax preparation, tax research, and advisory work are the functions most commonly offered in fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a tax consultant in North Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a staff accountant or tax associate role at a North Dakota regional firm such as Eide Bailly or Brady Martz, both of which run structured new-graduate hiring programs that rotate associates through tax work. Entry-level positions in accounts payable, bookkeeping, or payroll at larger North Dakota employers can also serve as a lateral bridge into a tax-focused role. Pursuing the Enrolled Agent credential or actively working toward CPA licensure through the North Dakota State Board of Accountancy gives candidates with limited experience a concrete advantage during the screening process.
Where can I find and apply to tax consultant jobs in North Dakota?
You can find and apply to tax consultant jobs in North Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
