Bookkeeper Jobs in North Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in North Dakota?
North Dakota does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so the path focuses on education and credentials recognized by employers. Most hiring employers expect at least an associate degree in accounting or a related field, and many prefer candidates who hold the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers certification or the Certified Bookkeeper designation. Community colleges such as North Dakota State College of Science and Bismarck State College offer accounting programs that align with local employer expectations.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in North Dakota?
Companies currently hiring bookkeepers in North Dakota include Intuit, Knife River, and State of North Dakota, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. North Dakota's energy, agriculture, and regional healthcare sectors tend to generate the most consistent bookkeeper demand outside of the major metro markets.
Which North Dakota cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck lead North Dakota in bookkeeper openings. Fargo drives the largest share as the state's commercial hub, home to regional corporate offices and financial services firms, while Bismarck's concentration of government agencies and healthcare employers sustains steady demand, and Minot's energy sector activity supports ongoing accounting needs in that market.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 8% of bookkeeper openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well the core duties translate to off-site work. Accounts payable processing, payroll, and month-end reconciliation are the bookkeeper functions most commonly performed fully remotely across North Dakota employers.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in North Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts payable or billing clerk role, which North Dakota employers in healthcare, agriculture, and energy regularly post for candidates without prior bookkeeping titles. Completing an accounting certificate at Bismarck State College or North Dakota State College of Science strengthens your application considerably. From a clerk role you build the transaction volume and software experience, typically QuickBooks, that moves you into a junior bookkeeper position within one to two years.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in North Dakota?
You can find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in North Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your background and location preferences, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
