Bookkeeper Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in New Jersey?
New Jersey does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so the path centers on education and credentials recognized by employers. Most hiring managers in New Jersey expect at least an associate degree in accounting or a related field, and many prefer candidates who hold the Certified Bookkeeper designation from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Building experience through accounts payable or payroll assistant roles at New Jersey accounting firms or corporate finance departments is the most common entry route.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in New Jersey?
Employers hiring bookkeepers in New Jersey right now include AIG, CP Engineers, and Ray America, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's dense mix of insurance carriers, pharmaceutical companies, and regional accounting firms creates consistent year-round demand for bookkeeping talent across the state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
Princeton, Mount Laurel, and Parsippany-Troy Hills have the most bookkeeper openings in New Jersey. Newark and Jersey City anchor the list because of their concentration of financial services firms, corporate back offices, and professional services employers, while Parsippany draws demand from the many pharmaceutical and technology company headquarters clustered in Morris County that rely on in-house accounting staff.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than most fields, since bookkeeping is primarily a desk-based, software-driven role with no requirement for physical presence in most settings. About 32% of bookkeeper openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how widely employers have accepted off-site work for this function. General ledger maintenance, accounts payable, and payroll processing are the sub-functions most frequently offered on a fully remote basis.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts payable or billing assistant role at a New Jersey accounting firm, healthcare system, or property management company, where general ledger exposure comes quickly and on-the-job training is common. Community colleges like Bergen Community College and Middlesex College offer short-term accounting certificate programs that New Jersey employers recognize. Earning a QuickBooks certification and applying to junior bookkeeping roles at mid-size firms in the Bergen or Morris County markets gives candidates without a degree a competitive foothold.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
