Financial Counselor Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in Kentucky?
Kentucky does not issue a state-specific license for financial counselors, so entry typically begins with a bachelor's degree in finance, social work, business, or counseling. Employers in healthcare and nonprofit settings often require or prefer nationally recognized credentials such as the Accredited Financial Counselor designation or certification through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. Candidates targeting hospital systems in Kentucky should also familiarize themselves with Medicaid eligibility and state assistance programs, as patient financial counseling is one of the largest hiring segments in the state.
Which companies hire financial counselors in Kentucky?
Employers hiring financial counselors in Kentucky right now include Magellan Health, Spalding University, and Louisville Urban League, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kentucky's concentration of large regional hospital systems, credit unions, and insurance headquarters means hiring tends to be consistent and distributed across multiple locations throughout the state.
Which Kentucky cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green lead Kentucky for financial counselor openings. Louisville drives the largest share of demand as the state's commercial and healthcare hub, home to major hospital networks and insurance employers, while Lexington supports a strong second market through its university medical center and banking sector, and Bowling Green draws steady openings from its growing regional healthcare and financial services base.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, and they're more common than in many comparable roles, since much of the counseling work involves phone, video, and document-based client interaction that translates well to remote settings. About 20% of financial counselor openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting demand from insurers and nonprofit credit counseling agencies in particular. Roles focused on patient financial assistance at hospital systems are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to patient financial counselor or financial assistance specialist openings at Kentucky's larger hospital systems, where Norton Healthcare and Baptist Health have historically brought on candidates from customer service, billing, or social work backgrounds and provided on-the-job training. Community action agencies and nonprofit credit counseling organizations across the state also hire without requiring prior counseling experience if candidates hold a relevant degree. Earning an Accredited Financial Counselor student credential while completing a degree gives candidates a concrete edge in competitive applicant pools.
