Functional Consultant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a functional consultant in New York?
Becoming a functional consultant in New York typically starts with a bachelor's degree in business, information systems, or a related discipline, followed by hands-on experience in a specific platform or industry vertical. New York does not require a state-issued license for this role, but employers in regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare expect platform certifications like SAP Certified Application Associate or Salesforce Administrator. Building experience at a New York consulting firm or in an in-house systems team is the most common entry path.
How much do functional consultants make in New York?
Functional consultants in New York earn a median of about $112,250 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,900 for the lowest 10% to over $209,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire functional consultants in New York?
Employers hiring functional consultants in New York right now include Capgemini, Crowe, and Tessera Labs, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial institutions, hospital networks, and large state agencies means demand is sustained across both private consulting firms and large in-house IT organizations.
Which New York cities have the most functional consultant jobs?
The cities with the most functional consultant openings in New York are New York and Bronx. New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of global financial firms, major consulting practices, and large healthcare systems, while Albany draws openings tied to state government technology modernization projects and Buffalo benefits from a growing regional professional services sector.
Are there remote functional consultant jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 17% of functional consultant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves configuration, documentation, and virtual workshops rather than on-site presence. Roles focused on system configuration, user training, and requirements gathering are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid flexibility, while go-live support and stakeholder discovery phases tend to require some in-person work.
How can I get hired as a functional consultant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from an adjacent business or IT analyst role into functional consulting by completing a platform certification such as Salesforce Administrator or SAP Certified Application Associate and targeting junior consultant or associate consultant openings at mid-size New York consulting firms. Large employers like Deloitte and Accenture run analyst development programs in their New York offices that onboard candidates without consulting experience. A demonstrated portfolio of process documentation or system configuration work, even from academic projects, strengthens an application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to functional consultant jobs in New York?
