General Superintendent Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a general superintendent in Texas?
Most general superintendents in Texas work their way up through field roles such as carpenter, foreman, or project superintendent before stepping into a general superintendent position. Texas does not require a single statewide general contractor license for all construction work, but certain project types and localities require registration with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. A bachelor's degree in construction management or civil engineering strengthens candidacy, and an OSHA 30-Hour Construction certificate is expected by virtually every major Texas contractor.
How much do general superintendents make in Texas?
General superintendents in Texas earn a median of about $101,470 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,040 for the lowest 10% to over $166,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire general superintendents in Texas?
Employers hiring general superintendents in Texas right now include Suffolk Construction, Clayco, and Fluor, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of large industrial, energy, and commercial construction projects means demand from both national general contractors and Texas-headquartered firms remains consistent throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most general superintendent jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and Austin account for the most general superintendent openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its dense energy infrastructure and industrial construction pipeline, Dallas-Fort Worth draws volume from commercial real estate and corporate campus development, and San Antonio supports steady demand through public works, healthcare facility builds, and a growing logistics sector.
Are there remote general superintendent jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. General superintendent work is inherently on-site, requiring daily oversight of crews, subcontractors, and physical construction progress. About 5% of general superintendent openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve pre-construction planning, estimating review, or multi-project oversight roles rather than day-to-day field management.
How can I get hired as a general superintendent in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a field laborer, carpenter's apprentice, or assistant superintendent and building hands-on experience with a Texas general contractor. Large firms like Turner Construction and Flintco run superintendent development programs that move high-performing field staff into supervisory roles. Completing an apprenticeship through the Associated Builders and Contractors Texas chapters, earning an OSHA 30-Hour card, and pursuing a construction management degree from a Texas university such as Texas A&M or University of Houston accelerates the path considerably.
Where can I find and apply to general superintendent jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to general superintendent jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers actively hiring. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level, specialty, and preferred metro, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
