Healthcare Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a healthcare worker in Iowa?
The path depends on the specific role, but most clinical positions in Iowa require completing an accredited program and obtaining a state credential through the Iowa Department of Public Health or the Iowa Board of Medicine, Nursing, or Pharmacy, depending on the discipline. Many roles also require passing a national exam such as the NCLEX, USMLE, or a field-specific certification before applying for an Iowa license. Administrative and support roles typically require relevant education and may not require state licensure.
Which companies hire healthcare workers in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring healthcares in Iowa include Murray Company, CVS Health, and CareerNation, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's healthcare hiring is anchored by large integrated systems and academic medical centers that recruit across a wide range of clinical, technical, and administrative specialties statewide.
Which Iowa cities have the most healthcare jobs?
Des Moines, Iowa, and Ankeny have the most healthcare openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the largest volume as the state capital and home to major regional health systems, while Iowa City's market is shaped heavily by University of Iowa Health Care, and Cedar Rapids draws consistent hiring from MercyOne and UnityPoint facilities serving the Corridor region.
Are there remote healthcare jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. Most healthcare roles in Iowa are hands-on and require on-site presence, so remote work is the exception rather than the rule. About 67% of healthcare openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with those opportunities concentrated in health informatics, medical coding, utilization review, and telehealth coordination roles.
How can I get hired as a healthcare worker in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying for a patient care technician, medical assistant, or health unit coordinator role, which large Iowa systems like UnityPoint Health and University of Iowa Health Care regularly fill with candidates who hold a certificate or associate degree but limited clinical hours. Many Iowa hospitals run new-graduate residency or internship programs that provide structured on-the-job training. Earning a Certified Nursing Assistant credential through an Iowa-approved program also opens immediate doors into long-term care and home health agencies statewide.
