Tips for Your Insurance Sales Consultant Job Search
Tailor your resume to license types
List your active state insurance licenses and lines of authority (life, health, P&C) prominently near the top of your resume. Recruiters screen for license status before reading anything else, so burying it in a summary or skills section costs you interviews.
Quantify your book of business
Replace vague phrases like 'grew sales' with the actual policies written, retention rates, or premium volume you managed. Hiring managers in insurance weigh numbers heavily because the role is commission-driven and results are measurable from day one.
Filter openings by compensation structure
Insurance sales consultant roles vary widely between base-plus-commission, pure commission, and salary-only structures. Identify your preferred model before applying so you're targeting roles that match your financial expectations and risk tolerance.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists insurance sales consultant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a production-focused interview
Expect interviewers to ask for your average monthly policies written, close ratio, and how you generate referrals. Rehearse specific numbers and scenarios in advance so your answers are concrete, not general claims about your work ethic or attitude.
Negotiate your ramp period and draw
Many commission-only roles offer a temporary draw against future earnings for new hires. Ask about the draw amount, how long it lasts, and how repayment works before you accept an offer, not after you've already signed.
Insurance Sales Consultant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most insurance sales consultants?
The companies hiring the most insurance sales consultants right now include EY, Farmers Insurance, and Alexander & Schmidt, with the largest share of openings in New York, Illinois, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand tends to be highest at regional carriers and independent agency networks expanding their producer headcount.
How many insurance sales consultant jobs are remote?
About 66% of insurance sales consultant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, though availability varies by role type. Medicare supplement, final expense, and group benefits sales positions are the most commonly offered as remote, while commercial lines and agency-based personal lines roles more often require in-office or field presence.
How do you become an insurance sales consultant?
Start by passing your state's insurance licensing exam in the lines you want to sell, such as life and health or property and casualty. Most states require a pre-licensing course before you can sit for the exam. Once licensed, entry-level roles at carriers or independent agencies provide the product training and mentorship needed to build a client base and advance.
Can you get hired as an insurance sales consultant with no experience?
Yes, many carriers and agencies hire candidates with no prior insurance experience if they're willing to obtain their license and can demonstrate sales aptitude. Retail, real estate, and financial services backgrounds transfer well because they show comfort with commission-based selling. Focus your application on measurable results from any client-facing or quota-driven role you've held.
What does the insurance sales consultant interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone screen focused on your sales background and licensing status, followed by one or two interviews covering production history, prospecting methods, and how you handle objections. Some employers include a role-play exercise where you walk through a mock client conversation. Final rounds often involve a meeting with a regional or district sales manager.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs?
You can find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search for roles that fit your license type, preferred compensation structure, and location, then apply directly to each listing that matches your experience and goals.
