Tips for Your Insurance Sales Consultant Job Search
List your active state licenses clearly
Hiring managers scan resumes for license lines before reading anything else. List every state where you hold a property and casualty or life and health license, the line of authority, and the year obtained. Unlicensed candidates without a clear plan get screened out early.
Quantify your book of business honestly
Recruiters in insurance sales want to know premium volume managed, retention rates, and new business written per year. Replace vague phrases like 'managed client relationships' with specific production metrics drawn from your actual performance reviews or agency reports.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists insurance sales consultant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target listings by carrier versus independent
Captive-carrier roles and independent-agency roles require different pitches. For captive positions, emphasize brand alignment and product depth. For independent agencies, highlight your ability to shop markets and advise across multiple carriers to match client needs.
Prepare a role-play answer for your sales pitch
Nearly every insurance sales interview includes a live role-play where you cold-call or present a policy to the interviewer. Rehearse a two-minute needs-based discovery conversation that opens with a question, not a product pitch, so you stand out against candidates who lead with features.
Negotiate your base-to-commission split upfront
Compensation structures vary widely across carriers and agencies. Before accepting any offer, clarify the draw period length, how renewals are credited, whether you own your book if you leave, and when commission vesting begins. These terms matter more than the headline number.
Insurance Sales Consultant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most insurance sales consultants?
The companies hiring the most insurance sales consultants right now include USI Insurance Services, State Farm, and New York Life, with the largest share of openings in Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strong at both national carriers and regional independent agencies.
How many insurance sales consultant jobs are remote?
About 25% of insurance sales consultant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote availability highest in personal lines telephone sales and group benefits consulting roles. Field-based commercial lines and agency-facing positions are more likely to require an in-office or on-site presence with clients.
How do you become an insurance sales consultant?
Start by passing your state's property and casualty or life and health licensing exam, which requires completing a pre-licensing course and passing a proctored test administered by your state's department of insurance. Once licensed, you can apply to entry-level producer or sales associate roles at a captive carrier or independent agency. Building a client base early, pursuing continuing education, and earning designations like the CPCU or CIC strengthens your profile over time.
Can you get hired as an insurance sales consultant with no experience?
Yes, many carriers and agencies hire candidates with no prior insurance experience if you already hold or are actively pursuing your state producer license. Entry-level roles often come with a draw against commission and structured training programs. Backgrounds in retail sales, financial services, or customer-facing roles translate well and help you stand out against other unlicensed applicants.
What does the insurance sales consultant interview process look like?
Most insurance sales consultant interviews involve a phone screen with a recruiter, followed by one or two rounds with a sales manager or agency principal. Expect behavioral questions about past sales performance, a live role-play exercise simulating a prospect call or needs-analysis conversation, and questions about how you build and retain a book of business. Final rounds at larger carriers may include an assessment of your sales aptitude or personality profile.
Where can I find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs?
You can find and apply to insurance sales consultant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your license lines, experience level, and preferred market, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
