Market Development Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a market development manager in California?
Most market development manager roles in California require a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a related discipline, though no state-issued license or California-specific credential governs the role. Employers in technology and life sciences hubs like the Bay Area and San Diego typically expect several years of experience in sales, product marketing, or business development. Building expertise in a high-growth California vertical, such as enterprise software or medical devices, accelerates hiring considerably.
How much do market development managers make in California?
Market development managers in California earn a median of about $193,620 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $104,370 for the lowest 10% to over $326,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire market development managers in California?
Employers hiring market development managers in California right now include Bank of America, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Sazerac, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major technology firms, and leading life sciences companies means demand stays consistent across both established corporations and well-funded growth-stage businesses.
Which California cities have the most market development manager jobs?
Carlsbad, Los Angeles, and Irvine have the most market development manager openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its dense concentration of enterprise technology and SaaS companies, while Los Angeles draws demand from media, consumer brands, and healthcare, and San Diego's strength in biotech and medical devices supports a steady pipeline of market development roles across that region.
Are there remote market development manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 58% of market development manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of much of the work. The portions of the role most commonly done remotely include market research, CRM pipeline management, and cross-functional strategy sessions, while in-person presence is still expected for key client meetings and product launches.
How can I get hired as a market development manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a business development representative or sales development representative role at a California technology or life sciences company, which builds the pipeline and prospecting skills market development managers use daily. Large Bay Area and Los Angeles employers in enterprise software and medical devices regularly hire new graduates into structured sales development programs that feed into market development tracks. A demonstrated understanding of a specific California vertical, supported by internships or a relevant portfolio project, gives candidates a clear edge over generalist applicants.
