Tips for Your Nursing Instructor Job Search
Tailor your resume for academic roles
Nursing instructor resumes need to show both clinical credentials and teaching experience separately. List your RN license, any graduate degree, and clinical specialty first, then add a teaching section that names courses taught, simulation labs run, or curriculum you developed.
Match your license to each posting
Many postings specify the state nursing license required, and some community colleges require licensure in the state where the program operates. Confirm your RN license is active in the posting's state before applying so your application isn't screened out automatically.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists nursing instructor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match your specialty and seniority and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight simulation and clinical coordination
Employers increasingly require instructors who can run simulation labs or coordinate clinical site placements. If you've managed simulation equipment, built clinical partnerships, or overseen student clinical rotations, call that out explicitly in your resume and cover letter.
Prepare a teaching philosophy statement
Most academic nursing programs ask for a teaching philosophy during the application process, not just at the interview. Draft a concise statement that connects your clinical background to how you teach adult learners, and attach it even when the posting doesn't explicitly request one.
Ask about course load and clinical ratios in interviews
Nursing instructor burnout is common when course loads or student-to-instructor clinical ratios are unsustainable. Ask during the interview how many courses you'd teach per semester, how many students per clinical section, and whether prep time is built into your paid hours.
Nursing Instructor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most nursing instructors?
The companies hiring the most nursing instructors right now include Keiser University, Baylor College of Medicine, and University of Colorado, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Texas, and Colorado, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community college systems and regional hospital networks consistently account for a large portion of active postings.
How many nursing instructor jobs are remote?
About 3% of nursing instructor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most remote roles concentrated in theory-based or online curriculum delivery rather than clinical supervision. Simulation coordination and hands-on clinical instruction almost always require on-site presence, so fully remote roles are more common in graduate-level or continuing education programs.
How do you become a nursing instructor?
To become a nursing instructor, you first need an active RN license and at least two years of clinical experience in a relevant specialty. Most programs require an MSN or higher, so completing or enrolling in a graduate nursing program is a common next step. After that, gaining teaching experience through adjunct positions, precepting, or clinical coordination roles strengthens your candidacy for full-time faculty positions.
Can you get hired as a nursing instructor without teaching experience?
Yes, some employers hire nursing instructors without formal teaching experience, especially for adjunct or clinical instructor roles where strong clinical credentials carry more weight. Highlighting experience as a preceptor, charge nurse, or staff educator can substitute for classroom experience. Starting in a part-time adjunct position is a common entry point for nurses transitioning into instruction for the first time.
What does the nursing instructor interview process look like?
The nursing instructor interview process typically includes an initial phone or video screen with HR, followed by a panel interview with the nursing department chair, faculty members, and sometimes a dean. Candidates are often asked to deliver a short teaching demonstration or present a lesson plan. Questions focus on clinical expertise, teaching philosophy, how you handle struggling students, and your familiarity with accreditation standards.
Where can I find and apply to nursing instructor jobs?
You can find and apply to nursing instructor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from programs and institutions across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialty, degree level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one that fits.
