Oncology Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a oncology specialist in California?
The path depends on your specialty within oncology. Physician oncologists must complete medical school, an internal medicine or radiation oncology residency, and a fellowship, then obtain a California medical license through the Medical Board of California and pursue board certification. Oncology pharmacists need a California pharmacist license from the California State Board of Pharmacy and often a PGY2 oncology residency. Oncology nurses pursue RN licensure through the California Board of Registered Nursing and typically earn the OCN credential.
How much do oncology specialists make in California?
Oncology specialists in California earn a median of about $125,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,250 for the lowest 10% to over $203,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire oncology specialists in California?
Employers hiring oncology specialists in California right now include Sutter Health, University of California, San Francisco, and Celgene Corporation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of NCI-designated cancer centers and large integrated systems like Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health means consistent hiring across both academic and community oncology settings.
Which California cities have the most oncology specialist jobs?
San Francisco, Crescent City, and Lakeport have the most oncology specialist openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco anchor the market because of their concentration of academic medical centers, NCI-designated cancer centers, and large health system campuses, while San Diego's strong biotech and research sector adds significant demand for clinical and translational oncology roles.
Are there remote oncology specialist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Most oncology specialist roles require direct patient contact, on-site procedures, or in-person team collaboration, making fully remote work uncommon. About 10% of oncology specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in oncology care coordination, utilization management, and clinical documentation roles.
How can I get hired as a oncology specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a position in a related clinical role first, such as oncology navigator, chemotherapy infusion nurse, or pharmacy technician in a cancer center, then building toward a specialist credential. Large California employers like UC Health campuses and Kaiser Permanente run new-graduate nursing residency programs with oncology tracks. Earning the OCN certification early or completing a rotation through a California NCI-designated cancer center strengthens any application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to oncology specialist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to oncology specialist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, cancer centers, and specialty practices. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty, then apply directly.
