Principal Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal in Louisiana?
To become a principal in Louisiana, you must earn the Louisiana Educational Leader Credential, administered through the Louisiana Department of Education. The path requires a master's degree in educational leadership or administration, a valid Louisiana teaching certificate, and completion of an approved leader preparation program. Candidates must also pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment. Many aspiring principals begin as assistant principals or instructional coaches within Louisiana public or charter school systems before advancing to a campus leadership role.
Which companies hire principals in Louisiana?
Employers hiring principals in Louisiana right now include Worley, Saronic Technologies, and American Electric Power, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Large parish school systems, charter management organizations, and private and parochial school networks throughout Louisiana tend to post principal openings on a rolling basis as leadership transitions occur.
Which Louisiana cities have the most principal jobs?
Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Monroe consistently have the most principal openings in Louisiana, driven by the concentration of large parish school systems, charter networks, and private institutions headquartered in or near each metro. New Orleans in particular has a uniquely dense charter school landscape that generates frequent campus leadership vacancies, while Baton Rouge and Shreveport openings reflect the size of their respective parish systems.
Are there remote principal jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, but they're rare. The principal role is fundamentally on-site, requiring daily presence on a school campus to manage staff, support students, and engage families. About 100% of principal openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in district-level administrative or virtual school leadership roles rather than traditional campus assignments.
How can I get hired as a principal in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an assistant principal or dean of students role within a Louisiana parish school system or charter network. Large employers like Orleans Parish, Jefferson Parish, and charter management organizations frequently hire instructional coaches, curriculum coordinators, and department heads who are pursuing or have recently completed an approved leader preparation program. Completing the Louisiana Educational Leader Credential process and building a track of formal teacher leadership experience, such as leading a professional learning community or managing a school improvement initiative, strengthens a candidate's standing considerably.
Where can I find and apply to principal jobs in Louisiana?
You can find and apply to principal jobs in Louisiana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Louisiana openings across parish school systems, charter networks, and private institutions. Search the listings for roles that match your credentials and experience level and apply directly to the positions that fit.
