Principal Solutions Engineer Jobs in North Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal solutions engineer in North Carolina?
The path to a principal solutions engineer role in North Carolina typically runs through progressive solutions engineering or pre-sales architecture experience rather than a state-issued license. North Carolina does not require a government credential specific to this role. Most hiring managers expect a technical bachelor's degree, hands-on platform expertise, and a portfolio of complex enterprise engagements. Certifications from AWS, Microsoft, or Cisco carry significant weight with Research Triangle and Charlotte employers.
How much do principal solutions engineers make in North Carolina?
Principal solutions engineers in North Carolina earn a median of about $121,530 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $73,070 for the lowest 10% to over $216,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal solutions engineers in North Carolina?
Employers hiring principal solutions engineers in North Carolina right now include Verizon, Veradigm, and Wells Fargo, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. North Carolina's concentration of enterprise technology headquarters, financial services firms, and federal contractor operations in the Research Triangle and Charlotte makes the state a particularly active market for principal-level technical roles.
Which North Carolina cities have the most principal solutions engineer jobs?
Charlotte, Cary, and Durham account for the largest share of principal solutions engineer openings in North Carolina. Charlotte drives demand through its major banking and financial technology sector, Raleigh and Research Triangle Park attract openings tied to the dense concentration of enterprise software and cloud vendors headquartered or regionally based there, and Durham benefits from proximity to large research institutions and health technology companies.
Are there remote principal solutions engineer jobs in North Carolina?
Yes, and more than most technical roles. About 100% of principal solutions engineer openings tied to North Carolina are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on virtual architecture reviews, pre-sales calls, and documentation. The portions most commonly performed on-site are executive presentations and initial client discovery sessions with local enterprise accounts.
How can I get hired as a principal solutions engineer in North Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a closely adjacent role such as a systems engineer, technical account manager, or solutions consultant position. North Carolina employers in the Research Triangle, including Red Hat and Lenovo's enterprise divisions, frequently hire associate solutions engineers from those adjacent tracks. Building cloud certifications and a documented portfolio of architecture proposals strengthens any application, and targeting mid-market technology firms in Charlotte or Durham before pursuing principal-level roles at larger companies is a practical progression.
