Most Pennsylvania employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems, followed by years in solutions engineering, pre-sales, or systems architecture roles. Earning vendor certifications from AWS, Microsoft, or Salesforce and building a portfolio of enterprise architecture wins are the credentials that consistently move candidates into principal-level consideration at Pennsylvania technology and financial services firms.
How much do principal solutions engineers make in Pennsylvania?
Principal solutions engineers in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $98,500 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,960 for the lowest 10% to over $140,820 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal solutions engineers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring principal solutions engineers in Pennsylvania right now include Comcast, Datavant, and Crane NXT, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's concentration of enterprise software companies, financial institutions, and large healthcare systems means hiring activity tends to be consistent throughout the year rather than seasonal.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most principal solutions engineer jobs?
Philadelphia, Malvern, and Warrendale have the most principal solutions engineer openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia drives the largest share of volume because of its dense cluster of enterprise technology companies, financial services firms, and health systems headquartered or regionally based there, while Pittsburgh's growing technology sector and corporate headquarters add meaningful openings, and the suburban Main Line corridor around Wayne and Malvern contributes consistently through technology-focused employers with operations there.
Are there remote principal solutions engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. Solutions engineering is a heavily consultative, presentation-driven role that translates well to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 75% of principal solutions engineer openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly the role has shifted away from requiring daily on-site presence. The portions most commonly done remotely are discovery calls, architecture workshops, and proposal work, while executive briefings or proof-of-concept labs occasionally require in-person attendance.
How can I get hired as a principal solutions engineer in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a solutions engineer role from a technical adjacent position such as systems administrator, software developer, or technical account manager, then building toward the principal level over time. Large Pennsylvania technology employers and enterprise software firms regularly hire associate solutions engineers or technical pre-sales specialists as stepping-stone roles. Earning a recognized vendor certification, contributing to open-source or portfolio architecture projects, and targeting internal transfer programs at established Pennsylvania firms are the moves that consistently accelerate that path.
