Psychologist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a psychologist in New York?
To become a licensed psychologist in New York, you must earn a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited program, complete a supervised internship, and accumulate the required postdoctoral supervised experience hours. Licensure is granted by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which requires passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. New York does not currently participate in the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact, so out-of-state candidates must apply directly through the state's own credentialing process.
Which companies hire psychologists in New York?
Employers hiring psychologists in New York right now include LifeStance Health, Lifestance Health, and SUNY Upstate Medical University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of large academic medical centers, state-run psychiatric facilities, and public school systems means psychology openings are spread across both the private healthcare sector and government-funded institutions throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most psychologist jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Brooklyn account for the most psychologist openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume because of its density of hospital systems, university training programs, and community mental health organizations, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through the State University of New York health campuses and the New York State Office of Mental Health's regional facilities.
Are there remote psychologist jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many clinical fields, because telehealth therapy and psychological assessment consultations have become widely accepted. About 43% of psychologist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much outpatient therapy and consultation work shifted online in recent years. Roles in direct assessment, neuropsychological testing, and inpatient care remain predominantly on-site, while outpatient therapy and supervision roles are most likely to offer remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a psychologist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a postdoctoral residency or fellowship, since New York State requires supervised postdoctoral hours before licensure and many employers will hire unlicensed candidates specifically into these structured roles. Large employers like NYU Langone Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, and New York State Office of Mental Health run formal postdoctoral programs for new graduates. Candidates from adjacent roles such as licensed clinical social worker or mental health counselor can also lateral into psychology departments, and holding a provisional New York psychology license while completing hours strengthens any application significantly.
