PT Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pt in California?
You must earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy from a CAPTE-accredited program and then apply for licensure through the California Physical Therapy Board, which requires passing both the National Physical Therapy Examination and the California Law Exam. After submitting your application and required documentation, the board reviews your credentials before issuing your license. California does not participate in the PT compact, so out-of-state licensees must apply for a California license directly.
How much do PTs make in California?
PTs in California earn a median of about $38,330 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $34,690 for the lowest 10% to over $60,200 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pts in California?
Employers hiring pts in California right now include Turner & Townsend Pty Limited, PTAG, and Center For Autism and Related Disorders, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and independent outpatient rehabilitation groups together generate most of the consistent volume across the state.
Which California cities have the most pt jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Oakland have the most pt openings in California right now. Los Angeles drives the largest share thanks to its dense concentration of hospital systems, sports medicine clinics, and rehabilitation networks, while San Diego and the Bay Area add substantial volume through academic medical centers, orthopedic groups, and a growing senior-care sector in surrounding suburban communities.
Are there remote pt jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 11% of pt openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most physical therapy practice. The remote and hybrid roles that do exist are concentrated in telehealth initial evaluations, home exercise program consultations, and administrative or case-management positions within larger California health systems.
How can I get hired as a pt in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to new-graduate residency programs, which large California systems like Kaiser Permanente and Scripps Health run in orthopedics and sports PT, and which provide structured mentorship while you build clinical hours. Applying for per-diem or part-time positions at skilled nursing facilities is another concrete route, since those settings tend to be more open to new graduates than hospital outpatient clinics. Completing your California licensure as early as possible and holding a current BLS certification will give your application an immediate edge.
Where can I find and apply to pt jobs in California?
You can find and apply to pt jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
