Registered Nurse Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse in Alaska?
To become a registered nurse in Alaska, you must graduate from an accredited nursing program, pass the NCLEX-RN examination, and obtain an active RN license from the Alaska Board of Nursing. Alaska participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses already holding a multistate compact license from another member state may practice in Alaska without applying for a separate state license. Those holding a single-state license from a non-compact state must apply directly to the Alaska Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement.
How much do registered nurses make in Alaska?
Registered nurses in Alaska earn a median of about $109,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $85,030 for the lowest 10% to over $149,070 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurses in Alaska?
Employers hiring registered nurses in Alaska right now include PeaceHealth, Voyage Health, and SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alaska's employer mix is shaped by large health systems, tribal health organizations, and the Indian Health Service, which together account for a significant share of the state's RN openings.
Which Alaska cities have the most registered nurse jobs?
The Alaska cities with the most registered nurse openings are Anchorage, Ketchikan, and Fairbanks. Anchorage dominates because it is home to the state's largest hospitals and specialty clinics, while Fairbanks and Juneau draw consistent openings through their respective regional medical centers, which serve as referral hubs for surrounding rural communities.
Are there remote registered nurse jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they're rare. Registered nursing is a hands-on clinical role, so most positions require on-site patient care. About 2% of registered nurse openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those that do exist are generally in telehealth triage, utilization review, or care management rather than direct bedside care.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for new graduates is a structured nurse residency program, and Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage runs one of the most established programs in the state. Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium also brings on new graduates for rotational placements across its facilities. Applying for med-surg or telemetry roles is the most common starting point, as those units tend to accept candidates without specialty experience. Holding an active Alaska RN license or a Nurse Licensure Compact multistate license before applying gives you a clear edge over candidates still awaiting credentials.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse jobs in Alaska?
You can find and apply to registered nurse jobs in Alaska on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
