Registered Nurse Med Surg Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse med surg in Kentucky?
You become a registered nurse med surg in Kentucky by first earning an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program, passing the NCLEX-RN, and applying for licensure through the Kentucky Board of Nursing. Kentucky participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses licensed in other compact states may practice without obtaining a separate Kentucky license. Most med-surg positions then require completing a hospital orientation or unit-specific training before independent patient assignment.
How much do registered nurse med surgs make in Kentucky?
Registered nurse med surgs in Kentucky earn a median of about $81,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,170 for the lowest 10% to over $111,750 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurse med surgs in Kentucky?
Companies currently hiring registered nurse med surgs in Kentucky include Vibra Travels, CommonSpirit Health, and Baptist Health System KY & IN, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Kentucky's largest acute-care systems, including those anchored in Louisville and Lexington, tend to post the highest volume of med-surg openings year-round.
Which Kentucky cities have the most registered nurse med surg jobs?
Lagrange, Bowling Green, and Lexington lead Kentucky for registered nurse med surg openings. Louisville drives the bulk of demand as home to Norton Healthcare and several large Baptist Health campuses, while Lexington's concentration of UK HealthCare and regional medical centers supports a strong secondary market, and smaller cities with critical access hospitals or regional health system affiliates round out the rest of the distribution.
Are there remote registered nurse med surg jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, but they're rare. Med-surg nursing is a hands-on bedside role requiring direct patient care, so the vast majority of openings require on-site presence. About 0% of registered nurse med surg openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve telephonic triage, utilization review, or case management functions rather than direct floor nursing.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse med surg in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a new-graduate residency program at a large Kentucky health system. Norton Healthcare, UK HealthCare, and Baptist Health all run structured new-grad residencies that place NCLEX-new-passers directly onto med-surg floors with mentored transition support. Candidates without hospital experience can also strengthen their applications by completing clinical rotations on acute-care units, holding current BLS certification, and pursuing CMSRN eligibility coursework. Lateral moves from roles like patient care technician or certified nursing assistant at the same facility often provide an inside advantage.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in Kentucky?
You can find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in Kentucky on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kentucky openings. Search the roles available, identify the positions that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
