Position Summary:
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant appointment in the Departments of Life Sciences. The successful candidate will contribute to research projects focused at- i) Identifying novel mechanisms involved in regulating HIV latency, and ii) Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in HIV associated neurological disorders. The successful candidate will be working with Vir Singh, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Microbiology, Department of Life Sciences.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
- Function somewhat independently and will conduct, design, and organize basic as well as specialized experiments using established protocols and, in some cases, developing new protocols if required.
- Collect and analyze the research data while maintaining detailed records of the experimental design, results, and samples.
- Generating figures with statistical analysis and presenting the data in research conferences as well as preparing manuscript for publication.
- Taking initiative to maintain effective communication with the supervisor and share data during meetings.
- Supervise and train undergraduate and master’s thesis research students. Coordinate efforts for maximum efficiency and best utilization of resources.
- Ordering and procurement of research supplies as well as dedicating efforts to general maintenance of laboratory
- Participates in required training activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Willing to learn/enhance skills needed to perform responsibilities through observation and/or experience.
- Demonstrates the ability to both work independently and with little direction and work confidentially with discretion.
- Ability to collaborate with others and work effectively in a team environment. This position also requires mentoring of undergraduate students.
- Observe schedules and meet assignment deadlines.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude and work ethic.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Education and Experience:
- BS (required) or MS in natural sciences with at least one year of experience.
- Experience working with biological samples in a research laboratory.
- Experience with cell culture, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, DNA extraction, Protein extraction, western blotting and experience in microbiological techniques.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Additional Information:
This on-site position is based in Albany, NY. The duties and responsibilities of this particular role require the need for consistent, in-person collaboration and/or interaction with our community, requiring all work to be performed full-time on-site. Standard work hours are from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM EST, Monday through Friday. Additional details pertaining to this position will be discussed during the interview process.
