Research Specialist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research specialist in New York?
Most research specialist roles in New York require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as public health, social sciences, biology, or economics, with many positions at larger institutions requiring a master's degree. New York does not issue a state license specific to research specialists, but clinical research roles frequently require certification through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. Building experience through university research programs or public sector agencies in Albany or New York City is the most common path.
Which companies hire research specialists in New York?
Employers hiring research specialists in New York right now include Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, and University at Buffalo, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of academic medical centers, think tanks, and global financial firms makes it one of the deepest markets in the country for research-focused roles.
Which New York cities have the most research specialist jobs?
Elmwood Ave, New York, and Rochester have the most research specialist openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its density of hospitals, universities, financial institutions, and policy organizations, while Buffalo draws demand from its growing life sciences sector and the University at Buffalo health system, and Albany generates openings through state government agencies and public policy research bodies.
Are there remote research specialist jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many other fields, since research specialist work is largely analytical and desk-based. About 10% of research specialist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the role's strong fit for distributed work. Literature review, data analysis, and report writing are the functions most commonly performed fully remotely, while fieldwork and lab-based components typically remain on-site.
How can I get hired as a research specialist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a research coordinator or research assistant role, which large New York medical centers such as NewYork-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai Health System post regularly as structured entry points. Completing a thesis-based graduate program or a public health practicum in New York City or Albany demonstrates hands-on research competence. Candidates who obtain a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator credential early stand out, and transitioning from adjacent roles such as data analyst or program evaluator within a New York state agency is another well-worn route.
Where can I find and apply to research specialist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to research specialist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings across industries and seniority levels. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
