School Nurse Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school nurse in California?
To work as a school nurse in California, you must hold an active Registered Nurse license from the California Board of Registered Nursing and obtain a School Nurse Services Credential through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The credential requires a bachelor's degree in nursing, clinical experience, and completion of an approved school nursing preparation program. Many districts also expect applicants to complete a supervised school nursing fieldwork component before or shortly after hire.
How much do school nurses make in California?
School nurses in California earn a median of about $140,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,260 for the lowest 10% to over $213,320 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire school nurses in California?
Employers hiring school nurses in California right now include DaVita, Quest Diagnostics, and Stanford Health Care, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large unified school districts across the state are the most consistent source of full-time, benefited positions, often with CalPERS retirement eligibility and set school-year schedules.
Which California cities have the most school nurse jobs?
San Diego, San Francisco, and Fresno have the most school nurse openings in California. Los Angeles dominates by volume because of the sheer size of LAUSD and its surrounding districts, while San Diego and Bay Area cities like Oakland and San Jose reflect large unified districts and dense charter networks that maintain dedicated nursing staff across dozens of campuses.
Are there remote school nurse jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 1% of school nurse openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how hands-on the role is by nature. The functions most likely to allow any remote component are telehealth consultations, health plan review, and case management coordination rather than direct daily student care.
How can I get hired as a school nurse in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a school nursing fieldwork placement while pursuing your California Commission on Teacher Credentialing School Nurse Services Credential, which introduces you directly to district hiring managers. Large unified districts such as LAUSD and San Francisco Unified occasionally post substitute or on-call school nurse roles that serve as a practical foot in the door. Candidates coming from pediatric, public health, or community health nursing backgrounds are competitive, and holding even a preliminary credential while your application is in process gives a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to school nurse jobs in California?
You can find and apply to school nurse jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across districts, charter networks, and university systems. Search the listings to find roles that match your credential level and preferred region, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
