Security Project Manager Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security project manager in New Mexico?
Most security project managers in New Mexico enter through a combination of a bachelor's degree in security management, information systems, or a related field and several years of hands-on security or project coordination experience. New Mexico does not issue a state-specific license for this role, but employers in the state's defense and federal contracting sectors expect a PMP certification and, for many positions, an active U.S. security clearance obtained through a federal sponsoring employer.
How much do security project managers make in New Mexico?
Security project managers in New Mexico earn a median of about $106,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,430 for the lowest 10% to over $173,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security project managers in New Mexico?
New Mexico security project manager roles are posted by HiredFirst, University of New Mexico, and Akima and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Mexico's heavy concentration of national laboratories and defense contractors means many openings require cleared personnel with federal program experience.
Which New Mexico cities have the most security project manager jobs?
Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe account for the largest share of security project manager openings in New Mexico. Albuquerque anchors most of the demand given its density of defense contractors and federal agency offices, while Santa Fe draws openings tied to state government and classified facility management, and Las Cruces benefits from proximity to White Sands Missile Range and related defense employers.
Are there remote security project manager jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because security project management often requires on-site access to cleared facilities or physical infrastructure. About 29% of security project manager openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those roles tend to be in program oversight, documentation, or vendor coordination rather than hands-on facility work.
How can I get hired as a security project manager in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a junior project coordinator or security analyst role at one of New Mexico's defense contractors or federal agencies, such as Sandia National Laboratories or a Leidos subsidiary, and building toward a full project management role from there. Earning a CompTIA Security+ or starting the PMP certification process signals commitment to employers. Adjacent roles in physical security operations, IT systems administration, or federal compliance coordination at Kirtland Air Force Base or White Sands often serve as practical stepping stones.
Where can I find and apply to security project manager jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to security project manager jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and clearance level, and apply directly through each listing.
