Social Work Assistant Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a social work assistant in Minnesota?
Most Minnesota employers require at minimum an associate degree in human services, social work, or a related field, with many preferring a bachelor's degree. Minnesota does not issue a separate state license for social work assistants, but you will work under the supervision of a Licensed Social Worker credentialed through the Minnesota Board of Social Work. Completing coursework in case management, human development, and Minnesota-specific child or adult protection statutes strengthens your application considerably.
Which companies hire social work assistants in Minnesota?
Minnesota social work assistant roles are posted by Minnesota State, University of St Thomas, and HealthPartners and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Minnesota's dense network of county human services departments, health systems, and nonprofits like Lutheran Social Service means openings appear across a broad range of organization types.
Which Minnesota cities have the most social work assistant jobs?
Saint Paul, Mankato, and Minneapolis have the most social work assistant openings in Minnesota. The Twin Cities concentration reflects the headquarters of major health systems, county social services offices, and large nonprofits, while Rochester's presence is driven largely by Mayo Clinic's extensive care coordination and social services teams, and Duluth draws on regional healthcare and tribal social service programs serving northern Minnesota.
Are there remote social work assistant jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, but they're rare. Social work assistant roles typically involve in-person client contact, home visits, and on-site collaboration with case managers, so most positions require physical presence. About 100% of social work assistant openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, and those that are remote tend to focus on administrative case documentation, telephonic intake screening, or care coordination for telehealth programs.
How can I get hired as a social work assistant in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to Minnesota county human services departments, which regularly hire case aides and eligibility workers that do not require prior professional social work experience. Hennepin County, Ramsey County, and Dakota County Human Services all post associate-level positions suited to new graduates. Completing a field practicum through a Minnesota college human services program, or transitioning from roles like community health worker or residential care aide, are common ways candidates without direct experience get their first hire.
Where can I find and apply to social work assistant jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to social work assistant jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current Minnesota openings from employers across the state. Search the roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit your experience and preferred location.
