Solution Engineer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a solution engineer in Illinois?
Most solution engineer roles in Illinois require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a comparable technical discipline. Illinois does not require a state-issued license for this role. Employers in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs typically look for candidates who combine a technical foundation with pre-sales or customer-facing experience, and holding vendor certifications from Salesforce, Microsoft, or AWS substantially strengthens an application in the Illinois market.
How much do solution engineers make in Illinois?
Solution engineers in Illinois earn a median of about $99,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,570 for the lowest 10% to over $162,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire solution engineers in Illinois?
Employers hiring solution engineers in Illinois right now include EY, Salesforce, and HealthFitness, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of enterprise software firms, financial institutions, and large manufacturing headquarters in the Chicago metro and the northwest suburbs makes it one of the more active markets for this role in the Midwest.
Which Illinois cities have the most solution engineer jobs?
Chicago, Lake Forest, and Illinois account for the largest share of solution engineer openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its dense concentration of enterprise technology firms, financial services companies, and corporate headquarters, while Schaumburg and Naperville draw openings from the large technology and manufacturing campuses anchored along the Interstate 90 and Interstate 88 corridors in the northwest and west suburbs.
Are there remote solution engineer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. Solution engineering is a largely desk-based, client-facing discipline conducted through video calls, demos, and digital collaboration tools, which makes remote and hybrid arrangements a natural fit. About 67% of solution engineer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The portions of the role most commonly done remotely are discovery calls, technical demonstrations, and proposal development, while on-site visits tend to be reserved for late-stage evaluations or enterprise client kickoffs.
How can I get hired as a solution engineer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a technical support, implementation, or inside sales role at a software company into a junior or associate solution engineer position. Large Illinois-based technology employers and Midwest offices of enterprise software firms regularly hire associate solution engineers from technical support queues or from new-graduate programs targeting computer science and engineering graduates of Illinois universities. Building a portfolio of product demonstrations, earning a vendor certification such as Salesforce Administrator or AWS Cloud Practitioner, and targeting companies with formal pre-sales development programs gives candidates without direct experience a concrete edge in Illinois hiring.
Where can I find and apply to solution engineer jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to solution engineer jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings across Chicago, the northwest suburbs, and the broader state. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
