Solution Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a solution engineer in Virginia?
Solution engineering in Virginia does not require a state-issued license. Most Virginia employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems, combined with hands-on technical experience. For roles supporting federal agencies, which are common throughout Northern Virginia and the Hampton Roads corridor, obtaining or maintaining a federal security clearance is frequently a prerequisite. Vendor certifications from AWS, Microsoft, or Salesforce strengthen candidacy considerably across the Virginia market.
Which companies hire solution engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring solution engineers in Virginia right now include Salesforce, Esri, and Appian, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal IT integrators, and cloud-focused technology firms makes it one of the steadier markets for solution engineering roles in the eastern United States.
Which Virginia cities have the most solution engineer jobs?
McLean, Vienna, and Herndon account for the most solution engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its density of federal agencies, defense contractors, and major cloud infrastructure campuses, while Richmond draws hiring from financial services and healthcare technology firms, and Hampton Roads sees steady demand tied to Navy and defense systems integrators operating in that region.
Are there remote solution engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most technical fields. About 10% of solution engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and client-facing nature of the work. Pre-sales and cloud architecture components of the role tend to be the most remote-friendly, while hands-on proof-of-concept deployments and cleared federal engagements typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a solution engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is transitioning from a technical support, systems administrator, or junior developer role at one of Virginia's large technology employers or defense contractors. Companies like Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton run associate-level and new-graduate programs that move candidates toward customer-facing technical roles over time. Building a portfolio around a cloud platform certification, such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, provides a concrete credential that Virginia hiring managers recognize as evidence of readiness for solution engineering work.
