STATEMENT OF JOB
The Manager of Infrastructure Services provides technical and operational leadership for the university’s IT infrastructure, with a strong focus on enterprise networking and complex infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, security, and availability of network and server systems and serves as the lead for infrastructure initiatives, coordinating across IT teams, vendors, and leadership to deliver reliable and scalable services.
This position requires deep hands-on networking expertise combined with the ability to lead and manage multiple infrastructure projects and staff, often taking ownership of initiatives from planning through execution.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Infrastructure & Networking Leadership
- Serve as the technical lead for campus network and infrastructure systems, including routing, switching, wireless, firewalls, and network security.
- Design, implement, and maintain enterprise network architectures and server environments (Windows, Linux, and Apple platforms).
- Act as the primary administrator for networking, firewalls, email systems, and core server infrastructure.
- Plan and manage all network layers, topology, and related infrastructure components.
- Ensure high availability, performance, and security of all infrastructure systems.
Project Management & Strategic Execution
- Lead and manage IT infrastructure projects from concept through completion, including upgrades, expansions, and technology refresh initiatives.
- Develop project scope, timelines, resource requirements, and success criteria.
- Coordinate cross-functional project teams and external vendors to ensure efficient and effective project delivery.
- Organize and manage multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision.
- Forecast infrastructure needs, including hardware and software upgrades, and make recommendations for system enhancements.
Operations & Reliability
- Develop operational strategies, budgets, goals, and priorities in coordination with IT leadership and the CIO.
- Design and implement processes and procedures to maximize service quality, reliability, and outage prevention.
- Perform and oversee backup and recovery operations for network devices, firewalls, and server systems.
- Ensure the department maintains necessary tools, parts, and documentation to respond to outages and emergencies.
- Support on-site disaster recovery planning and execution.
- Work outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for maintenance, upgrades, or incident response.
Management & Collaboration
- Manage, supervise, and mentor infrastructure services staff.
- Provide technical guidance and act as an escalation point for complex infrastructure issues.
- Work closely with vendors and service providers to resolve hardware and software problems.
- Develop and maintain clear technical documentation, network diagrams, and operating procedures.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience in networking and IT infrastructure, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred certifications include Network +, MCSE, MSITP, Linux +, CCNA/CCNP, or equivalent.
- Experience in leading IT infrastructure projects in a medium to large enterprise environment is strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Strong expertise in enterprise networking technologies (routing, switching, firewalls, wireless, and security).
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex IT infrastructure projects.
- Ability to supervise and develop technical staff.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to establish policies, standards, and best practices for infrastructure systems.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
