Therapist Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a therapist in Montana?
You earn a master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field, then apply for licensure through the Montana Board of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors. Depending on your degree, you pursue either a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Professional Counselor credential, both of which require supervised post-degree hours and a passing score on a board-approved exam. Completing those supervised hours at a Montana clinical site is a common path for new graduates.
Which companies hire therapists in Montana?
Montana therapist roles are posted by Voyage Health, Granite Peak Home Health, and HiredFirst and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Larger health systems and community mental health centers tend to post the most consistent openings across the state's major metros and rural service areas.
Which Montana cities have the most therapist jobs?
Billings, Missoula, and Helena hold the most therapist openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's largest city and home to major health systems, Missoula's concentration of university and nonprofit behavioral health organizations drives demand there, and Great Falls anchors hiring in north-central Montana through its regional medical and human services network.
Are there remote therapist jobs in Montana?
Yes, and more than many clinical roles, because telehealth has become widely accepted in therapy. About 7% of therapist openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the state's push to extend mental health access to rural and frontier communities. Telehealth outpatient counseling and remote case management positions tend to be the most common fully remote options.
How can I get hired as a therapist in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an associate or provisional license through the Montana Board of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors while completing the required supervised hours at a community mental health center or tribal health program. Billings Clinic and RiverStone Health both offer structured clinical supervision arrangements for post-graduate candidates. Roles titled case manager, mental health technician, or community health worker are strong lateral entry points that build the documented hours needed for full licensure.
Where can I find and apply to therapist jobs in Montana?
