Tips for Your Triage Registered Nurse Job Search
Quantify your triage volume on your resume
Hiring managers want to know how many patients you assessed per shift and the acuity levels you handled. List your average daily patient volume and the highest-acuity cases you triaged to make your experience concrete and comparable across candidates.
List your triage-specific certifications prominently
Certifications like CEN, CPEN, or TNS signal triage readiness far more than a general RN license alone. Place them in a dedicated credentials section near the top of your resume so recruiters spot them before reading your work history.
Filter openings by triage setting not just title
Job postings rarely agree on titles, so search by setting too: ED triage, telephone triage, or urgent care intake. You'll surface relevant openings that use titles like intake nurse or assessment RN but require the same clinical triage skill set.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists triage registered nurse openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for acuity-based scenario questions
Triage interviews almost always include a patient scenario where you must assign an ESI or triage category on the spot. Practice walking through your clinical reasoning out loud, naming the red flags you prioritized and why, so your thought process is clear to the panel.
Negotiate shift differentials alongside base pay
Triage nurses frequently work nights, weekends, and holiday rotations, so shift differentials and on-call premiums can meaningfully affect your total compensation. Ask about differential rates and scheduling expectations before accepting any offer.
Triage Registered Nurse Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most triage registered nurses?
The companies hiring the most triage registered nurses right now include Sanford Health, Atrium Health, and Advocate Aurora Health, with the largest share of openings in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems with large emergency departments and telehealth providers tend to post the highest volume of triage roles consistently.
How many triage registered nurse jobs are remote?
About 19% of triage registered nurse openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most of those positions concentrated in telephone triage and nurse advice line roles where patient assessments happen entirely over the phone or via video. Bedside and emergency department triage positions remain almost exclusively on-site.
How do you become a triage registered nurse?
You become a triage registered nurse by first earning an ADN or BSN, passing the NCLEX-RN, and obtaining your state RN license. From there, most employers require at least two years of acute care or ED experience before moving into a dedicated triage role. Earning a CEN or completing ESI triage training strengthens your candidacy significantly.
Can you get hired as a triage registered nurse with limited experience?
Getting hired directly into triage with limited experience is uncommon, but you can build toward it by working in a busy medical-surgical or urgent care unit first. Some smaller urgent care centers and telephone triage companies hire RNs with strong assessment skills and less than two years of experience if you can demonstrate clinical confidence and a working knowledge of triage protocols.
What does the triage registered nurse interview process look like?
Most triage RN interviews include a phone screen with HR, followed by a clinical interview with a nurse manager or ED director that features patient scenario questions requiring you to assign acuity levels and explain your reasoning. Some hospitals add a brief skills assessment or shadow shift before extending an offer, particularly for high-volume emergency departments.
Where can I find and apply to triage registered nurse jobs?
You can find and apply to triage registered nurse jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your setting preference, shift availability, and experience level, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
