Which legal companies sponsor visas in California?
Major law firms sponsoring visas in California include Latham & Watkins, Skadden Arps, Wilson Sonsini, Morrison & Foerster, and Gibson Dunn. Tech-focused firms like Fenwick & West and Cooley also actively sponsor, particularly for attorneys with IP and corporate expertise. Many mid-size firms in entertainment and international law also participate in sponsorship programs.
What visa types are most common for legal roles in California?
H-1B visas dominate for attorney positions requiring specialized legal expertise, while O-1 visas are common for attorneys with distinguished records in international law, IP, or entertainment. TN status works for Canadian and Mexican lawyers, and E-3 visas serve Australian attorneys. Large firms often file multiple visa types depending on the candidate's background.
Which California cities have the most legal sponsorship jobs?
San Francisco and Los Angeles lead in sponsorship opportunities, followed by Silicon Valley cities like Palo Alto and San Jose for tech law roles. Orange County offers opportunities in business law, while San Diego has growing life sciences legal practices. Entertainment law positions concentrate in West Hollywood and Century City areas.
How to find legal visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Search Migrate Mate for California legal positions with visa sponsorship filters active. Focus your applications on large international firms with established immigration practices, as they're most likely to sponsor. Target firms with strong corporate, IP, or international practice groups, which typically have more sponsorship experience and budget allocation.
Are there specific considerations for legal visa sponsorship in California?
California's high cost of living means prevailing wages for attorneys are among the nation's highest, which can help meet H-1B salary requirements. The state's strong ties to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Stanford law schools create pipelines for OPT-to-H-1B transitions. Entertainment and tech specializations are particularly valued by California sponsors.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored legal jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
