INTRODUCTION

ASML is seeking a Mechatronics / Robotics Design Engineer to join the Wilton, CT development location as we break new ground in the emerging field of photolithography. As a Mechatronics Engineer, you will specify, design, develop, realize, integrate, and test modules and tools in a multi-disciplined team, collaborating closely with cross-functional partners and suppliers. You will deliver within system specifications, cost targets, and project schedules, ensuring timely realization of solutions that contribute to competitive, achievable, and serviceable products. The mechatronics engineer provides discipline specific expertise throughout the entire product life cycle. This includes concept feasibility, new product introduction, existing product sustainment, and customer facing problem resolution. The position requires highly motivated, extremely organized, and self-driven individuals.

The mechatronics engineer will work on mechatronics, precision handling of delicate parts, product and system integration, and software functionality, all specific to ASML products. The main focus will be mechatronics and control systems on advanced modules in lithography tools. Candidate should have direct experience in the design and test of mechatronic systems and control systems, preferably in the area of industrial robotics integration.

As job grade increases, the role expands from executing well-defined engineering work to leading technical scope, realizing complex modules, driving roadmap direction, and steering teams across multiple complex designs to ensure system-level integration and delivery.

This position may require access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). SCOPE

Take the lead in developing complex parts of modules and deliver technically complex solutions with full ownership, considering industrialization and cross-team impacts. Collaborate across multiple teams, lead interfaces with suppliers and other disciplines in less defined environments, and guide a small group of peers through technical execution.

DESIGN:

• Design and develop custom mechatronics systems with a cross sector team, including translating stages, rotary motion, multi-link positioners, sensors, servos, actuators, etc.
• Design path optimization algorithms and associated controls for end product.
• Analyze and improve dynamic disturbance response of robotic systems.
• Responsible for “sustaining engineering” tasks, resolving equipment design issues in a timely fashion as they arise at customer sites.
• Participate in concept designs and experiments for future equipment and subsystems.
• Design quality products using six sigma and lean process techniques for robust designs.
• Work with external suppliers to define and develop certain aspects of new product design while collaborating with internal cross discipline teams.
• Perform Root Cause Analysis: Troubleshooting from System to Component Level.
• Technical Writing: Define and Document Specifications, Design Decisions and Operations to be used in a clean manufacturing environment.

TEST & INTEGRATION:

• Develop and Implement the Product Validation and Verification (V&V) Strategy.
• Integrate control systems for industrial robotics into capital equipment, including all aspects such as dynamics, end-effector design, controls, etc.
• Troubleshoot designs to determine potential risks, failure modes, and corrective actions.
• Run complex mechatronic systems for test and qualification of design changes.
• Design, Develop and Build Product Specific Test Tooling.
• Test Validation and Verification (V&V) of Product Requirements.
• Technical Writing: Define and Document Test Procedures, and Test Reports.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will contribute to engineering deliverables that scale with job grade, from executing defined tasks and supporting senior engineers to owning complex technical scope, coordinating cross-functional work, and leading program-level outcomes.

• Identify, analyze, document, and manage requirements with traceability, and coordinate verification criteria to confirm deliverables meet intent.
• Conduct research and feasibility studies, document findings, and translate results into recommendations, tradeoffs, and decision inputs.
• Develop engineering concepts and solutions, make technical choices, and resolve issues to meet functionality, performance, cost, and compliance needs.
• Define and communicate specifications and high-level designs, align interfaces, and support reviews and approvals to enable quality execution.
• Support system or product integration by coordinating dependencies, applying configuration management, and enabling smooth project execution.
• Define and execute validation and test approaches, improve methods and procedures, and ensure qualification evidence supports release readiness.
• Estimate effort, plan and track work, manage risks and dependencies, and deliver assigned work packages or projects to agreed quality and timelines.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, share knowledge through coaching and mentoring as applicable, and follow EHS policies while identifying and mitigating safety risks.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• BS or BE degree in a relevant technical field required. MS or PhD preferred.
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience required.

Technical & functional skills

• Requirements, Interfaces & Technical Specification Management: Ability to identify, analyze, document, and manage requirements with traceability, translate them into clear specifications, and align interfaces so engineering deliverables meet intent and enable reliable downstream design, integration, and verification.
• Engineering Solution Development: Ability to develop engineering concepts and solutions, make sound technical tradeoffs, resolve issues, and realize designs that meet functionality, performance, cost, compliance, and schedule constraints within system/module specifications.
• Integration, Verification & Validation (V&V) Execution: Ability to plan and execute verification and validation, ensure qualification evidence supports release readiness, and support system/product integration by coordinating dependencies and applying disciplined configuration/traceability to deliver working, testable solutions.
• Preferred knowledge, experience and skills in the Mechatronics Domain:
• Mechatronics engineering background or specialization in closely related areas such as robotics or other fields.
• Experience with PID controllers, linear and nonlinear calibrations, flexible dynamics.
• Experience designing complex mechanisms such as robot grippers.
• Basic experience with mechatronics behavior predictive modeling and methods in MATLAB / SIMULINK or similar tools, including “first principle” engineering equations and other techniques, particularly applied to dynamic system simulation and implementation.
• Ability to apply “classical control theory” and “digital control theory” including frequency domain, stability analysis, Nyquist / Bode plots, Velocity-Acceleration-Jerk (VAJ), feedback / feedforward, dynamics, gain and phase, transfer functions, continuous / discrete feedback control, real time controls, etc.
• Ability to derive conclusions from analyses and make practical recommendations.
• Strong technical writing and communication skills in English, including presenting results based on strong statistical evidence to audiences of a wide range of technical abilities.
• Exposure to multi-disciplinary projects, such as imaging / optical systems, semiconductor, or lithography preferred but not required.

The current base salary range for this role is $102,000 – $150,000.
