Which electronics companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Iowa?
Collins Aerospace and its parent RTX are among the most active electronics LCA filers in Iowa, particularly in Cedar Rapids, with roles spanning avionics, RF systems, and embedded software. Deere & Company sponsors electronics engineers in Waterloo and Moline-adjacent facilities. Smaller Iowa manufacturers and defense contractors also file LCAs for electrical and hardware roles, though sponsorship activity varies by hiring cycle and project need.
Which cities in Iowa have the most electronics F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Cedar Rapids leads Iowa for electronics sponsorship activity, driven by its aerospace and defense electronics cluster anchored by Collins Aerospace. Des Moines has a growing technology and industrial electronics presence, with hardware and systems roles at manufacturing firms. Iowa City and Coralville attract electronics talent through university-affiliated research and medical device companies. Waterloo and Ames also see periodic electronics LCA filings, particularly in agricultural and embedded systems engineering.
What types of electronics roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship in Iowa?
Roles that most commonly qualify include electrical engineer, hardware design engineer, embedded systems engineer, RF engineer, PCB layout engineer, test engineer, and firmware developer. These positions typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field, satisfying the specialty occupation standard that underpins F-1 OPT authorization. Technician-level roles without a degree requirement less frequently qualify for sponsorship under OPT.
How do I find electronics F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT job seekers and surfaces electronics roles in Iowa where employers have verified LCA filing history, so you can focus on companies that have actively sponsored international candidates. Filter by the Electronics & Hardware category and Iowa to see current openings matched to your OPT authorization. Checking employer LCA history before applying saves time and improves your chances of finding a role that can transition to H-1B visa sponsorship if needed.
Are there state-specific or industry-specific considerations for electronics F-1 OPT jobs in Iowa?
Iowa's electronics sector is heavily tied to defense and aerospace manufacturing, meaning some roles at facilities like Collins Aerospace require security clearances that are generally unavailable to F-1 OPT holders who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. STEM-designated electronics programs at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa make graduates eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, which significantly broadens employer interest. Confirming a role's clearance requirements before applying is a practical first step for OPT candidates in this sector.
