Which insurance companies in Iowa sponsor H-1B visas?
Principal Financial Group and EMC Insurance are among the most active H-1B sponsors in Iowa's insurance sector, based on Department of Labor LCA disclosure data. Nationwide, Transamerica, and Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield have also filed H-1B petitions for Iowa-based positions. Sponsorship activity is concentrated in Des Moines, where most of these carriers have their headquarters or major regional offices.
Which cities in Iowa have the most insurance H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines is by far the leading city for insurance H-1B sponsorship in Iowa. The city hosts the headquarters of Principal Financial Group, EMC Insurance, and Transamerica, along with significant regional offices for national carriers. Cedar Rapids has a smaller but notable concentration of insurance employers, including Transamerica's operations and regional underwriting offices. Outside these two cities, insurance H-1B opportunities in Iowa are limited.
What types of insurance roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Iowa?
Roles that consistently qualify for H-1B sponsorship are those requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a standard entry requirement. In Iowa's insurance sector, that typically includes actuaries, data scientists, financial analysts, software engineers supporting insurance platforms, and risk analysts. General agent or sales-focused roles rarely qualify because they don't require a specific degree field, while technical and quantitative positions meet the specialty occupation standard more reliably.
How do I find insurance H-1B sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters insurance H-1B sponsorship jobs in Iowa by employer sponsorship history, role type, and location. Rather than sorting through general job boards where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces positions from employers with documented H-1B filing activity in Iowa's insurance sector, including Des Moines-based carriers. It's a practical starting point if you're targeting actuarial, analytics, or underwriting roles with verified sponsorship potential.
Are there any Iowa-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in the insurance industry?
Iowa's insurance regulatory environment means employers operate under state licensing requirements, which can affect how quickly a new H-1B hire can take on client-facing responsibilities. For roles requiring an Iowa insurance producer license, employers typically account for licensing timelines during onboarding. Additionally, because Des Moines has a concentrated and well-networked insurance community, many H-1B positions are filled through internal referrals, so building connections within the local market can matter as much as the formal application process.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B insurance jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
