Attorney General Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a attorney general in Tennessee?
To work as an attorney general in Tennessee, you must be licensed to practice law in the state, which requires passing the Tennessee bar exam administered by the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners or obtaining admission by reciprocity. Candidates must hold a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Most positions within the Office of the Attorney General and Reporter also require prior litigation or public law experience before hire.
Which companies hire attorney generals in Tennessee?
Companies currently hiring attorney generals in Tennessee include TN Attorney General's Office, Morgan & Morgan, and Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Tennessee's combination of large healthcare systems, federal agencies, and Fortune 500 headquarters in Nashville and Memphis makes it one of the more active markets for government and in-house legal counsel roles.
Which Tennessee cities have the most attorney general jobs?
Nashville and Memphis account for the largest share of attorney general openings in Tennessee. Nashville dominates as the state capital and home to the Office of the Attorney General, major healthcare employers, and corporate headquarters, while Memphis draws openings from logistics firms and regional financial institutions, and Knoxville sees demand tied to the Tennessee Valley Authority and the University of Tennessee system.
Are there remote attorney general jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. About 25% of attorney general openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting the fact that most government and litigation roles require courtroom appearances, agency meetings, or in-person client work. Research, policy analysis, and compliance advisory functions within larger legal departments are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a attorney general in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a clerkship or fellowship with the Tennessee Attorney General's Office, which regularly accepts recent law graduates for structured rotations in divisions such as consumer protection and Medicaid fraud. Candidates should also pursue positions as assistant attorneys general at the county or district level, where new admittees regularly start. Passing the Tennessee bar exam and completing a clinical or externship placement with a state agency strengthens any application from a first-year attorney.
Where can I find and apply to attorney general jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to attorney general jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current Tennessee openings across government offices, healthcare systems, and corporate legal departments. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly from each listing.
