Behavioral Health Tech Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health tech in Texas?
Most Texas employers hire behavioral health techs with a high school diploma and require on-the-job training, though an associate or bachelor's degree in psychology, human services, or a related field strengthens your application significantly. Texas does not issue a state license specifically for behavioral health technicians, but many employers require completion of a Texas-approved crisis prevention or de-escalation course before your first shift. Registered behavior technician credentialing through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board is increasingly expected for roles in ABA-focused settings.
How much do behavioral health teches make in Texas?
Behavioral health teches in Texas earn a median of about $39,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $33,240 for the lowest 10% to over $49,250 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire behavioral health techs in Texas?
Employers hiring behavioral health techs in Texas right now include Driscoll Children's Hospital, H2 Health, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems and the state's significant investment in community mental health infrastructure mean hiring is distributed across both major metro hospital networks and regional community mental health centers.
Which Texas cities have the most behavioral health tech jobs?
Corpus Christi, Houston, and Salado have the most behavioral health tech openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth drive volume through their large hospital systems and growing outpatient behavioral health networks, while San Antonio's substantial military and veterans' health infrastructure creates consistent demand for techs trained in trauma and co-occurring disorder support.
Are there remote behavioral health tech jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Behavioral health tech work is predominantly hands-on and requires direct patient contact, so most roles are on-site in hospitals, residential facilities, or community settings. About 4% of behavioral health tech openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve telephone crisis line support or administrative care coordination rather than direct clinical duties.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health tech in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to community mental health centers operated by Local Mental Health Authorities across Texas, which regularly hire entry-level technicians and provide structured on-the-job training. Large Texas health systems run new-employee orientation programs that pair inexperienced hires with senior techs on inpatient psychiatric units. Lateral moves from roles like direct support professional, crisis hotline counselor, or psychiatric unit patient care technician are recognized pathways, and earning a registered behavior technician credential before you apply gives candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health tech jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to behavioral health tech jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employer through the listing.
