Business Development Jobs in San Diego: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a business development job in San Diego?
Focus your search on San Diego's three dominant hiring corridors: the Sorrento Valley and Torrey Pines biotech belt, the Downtown financial and professional services district, and the Kearny Mesa defense and government contracting cluster. Employers here favor candidates who can demonstrate pipeline ownership and relationships within life sciences, defense tech, or enterprise software. Experience selling to government primes or navigating regulated industries gives you a clear edge in this market.
Which companies hire business developments in San Diego?
Companies currently hiring business developments in San Diego include RPM, SAIC, and Sony, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The local market skews toward mid-size technology companies, defense contractors, and growth-stage biotech firms rather than large consumer brands.
Are there remote business development jobs in San Diego?
Yes, though the role is only partially remote since relationship-building and in-person client meetings remain central to most positions. About 80% of business development openings tied to San Diego are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, concentrated in SaaS and enterprise software roles. Client-facing responsibilities tied to defense contractors and biotech partnerships in Sorrento Valley tend to require more on-site presence.
How can I get a business development job in San Diego with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Diego is through a sales development representative or account coordinator role at one of the city's many growth-stage SaaS or healthtech companies, several of which operate out of the Sorrento Mesa and UTC areas. San Diego's startup ecosystem and incubators like EvoNexus also run programs that create junior business development openings. Familiarity with the local defense or biotech procurement landscape, even from internships or coursework at UC San Diego or SDSU, strengthens your candidacy significantly.
