Clinical Supervisor Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical supervisor in California?
To become a clinical supervisor in California, you typically need a full California license issued by the Board of Behavioral Sciences, such as an LCSW, MFT, or LPCC, which requires a graduate degree in a qualifying field, completion of supervised clinical hours, and passing the relevant board exam. Once licensed, most employers require additional years of post-licensure experience before moving into a supervisory role.
Which companies hire clinical supervisors in California?
Employers hiring clinical supervisors in California right now include Center For Autism and Related Disorders, 360 Behavioral Health, and Goals for Autism, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's scale and breadth of publicly funded behavioral health programs means county departments, large nonprofit treatment networks, and integrated health systems are consistently among the most active hirers.
Which California cities have the most clinical supervisor jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most clinical supervisor openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to the sheer size of its county mental health system and nonprofit treatment sector, while San Francisco and Sacramento benefit from dense concentrations of integrated health systems, county behavioral health agencies, and community mental health centers that maintain ongoing supervisory staffing needs.
Are there remote clinical supervisor jobs in California?
Yes, but they are limited. Clinical supervisors often carry direct oversight responsibilities for in-person clinical staff and client care, which keeps most roles on-site or hybrid. About 41% of clinical supervisor openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The functions most likely to shift remote are administrative supervision, documentation review, and telehealth program oversight rather than direct team or caseload supervision.
How can I get hired as a clinical supervisor in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a lead clinician or senior clinician role first, which many large California county departments and nonprofit behavioral health agencies use as a stepping stone to supervisory positions. Organizations like Telecare Corporation and Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services regularly hire associate-level staff and provide structured pathways into supervision. Completing your California BBS hours efficiently, pursuing voluntary supervisory responsibilities such as mentoring interns, and obtaining relevant certifications in substance use disorder counseling can give you a meaningful edge when applying for your first supervisory title.
Where can I find and apply to clinical supervisor jobs in California?
You can find and apply to clinical supervisor jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across behavioral health, community mental health, and integrated care settings. Find the roles that fit your license, specialty, and location, and apply directly to each one.
