Job Description
Take the next step in your career with an organization that strategically invests in the long-term health of the company, its technology, and its people. The AbbVie Business Technology Solutions (BTS) team drives the digital transformation necessary for our treatments to positively impact patients' lives.
As a Business Systems Consultant in BTS Information Research (IR), you will support the global Development Biological Sciences (DBS) organization, including Preclinical Safety (PCS) and Regulated Bioanalysis. You will serve as a key liaison between business stakeholders and IT, translating business needs into effective, compliant, and scalable technology solutions. This role requires strong ownership, consultative leadership, and the ability to influence across business and technology teams. Your key responsibilities will include understanding and documenting business process flows, gathering business requirements, identifying improvement opportunities, and leading system implementation and support efforts. You will manage validated GxP systems, including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), data, and imaging management platforms such as Concentriq, and Environmental Monitoring applications such as WatchDog.
Responsibilities:
- Business Partnership & Strategy: Partner directly with BTS, vendors, and DBS stakeholders to understand business processes, priorities, drivers, and strategies across multiple areas. Translate needs into technology-enabled opportunities, strategic initiatives, and business process improvements.
- Systems Ownership & Accountability: Serve as IT System Owner (ITSO) for assigned business systems, including GxP / validated applications such as LIMS, laboratory data and imaging platforms, and environmental monitoring systems. Maintain System Life Cycle (SLC) documentation and own end-to-end accountability for system quality, compliance, and delivery outcomes - partnering with vendors and technical teams to resolve issues, deliver enhancements, and translate business needs into effective solutions.
- Process Improvement & Information Strategy: Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce redundancies, and strengthen information management practices across DBS business operations and applications. Assess business benefits, support prioritization decisions, and ensure proposed process and technology solutions align with business needs.
- AI & Technology Enablement: Identify opportunities to apply AI tools that improve or accelerate DBS business operations and scientific workflows, and partner with stakeholders and BTS teams to bring those opportunities to life.
- Cross-Functional Delivery: Collaborate with global IR DevSci, BTS, vendors, business teams, and other technology partners to coordinate solution delivery, manage interdependencies, coordinate vendor, and internal service handoffs, and ensure effective communication across stakeholder groups.
- Project, Change & Adoption Support: Support requirements definition, solution design validation, testing plans, training, change management, user adoption, project status communication, and issue resolution to ensure new systems and processes are implemented effectively.
- Compliance & Risk Awareness: Ensure work aligns with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies, procedures, data governance expectations, and relevant regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree with 7 years’ experience; Master's Degree with 6 years’ experience; PhD with 2 years’ experience.
- Demonstrated experience as a Business Analyst, Business Systems Consultant or similar role in a technical environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and prioritize effectively.
- Experience as an IT System Owner (ITSO) or similar role with accountability for the end-to-end system lifecycle, including design, implementation, operation, and decommissioning of non-GxP and GxP applications.
- Strong understanding of System Life Cycle (SLC), validation documentation, regulatory compliance, IT security, risk management, enterprise architecture, and security standards.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with system deployment across cloud (e.g., AWS), on-premise, and hybrid environments - with the ability to quickly grasp technical components, architectures, and integrations.
- Experience identifying or implementing AI, automation, analytics, or digital enablement opportunities.
- Experience supporting software product development and delivery, including software development best practices and Agile methodologies/tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
- Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, manufacturing, or regulated industry experience.

Frame credentials around biopharma consulting outcomes
AbbVie prioritizes consultants with demonstrable impact in drug lifecycle management, payer strategy, or commercial operations. Reframe your resume and case study experience around these outcomes before applying, not after you receive interest.
Target roles tied to therapeutic area launches
AbbVie's consulting demand spikes around product launches and pipeline transitions, particularly in immunology and oncology. Filtering open roles by these divisions increases your odds of landing a team that has active headcount and sponsorship budget approved.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
AbbVie sponsors several visa types, and the one that applies to you affects filing timelines significantly. Raise your status early with your recruiter so the legal team can confirm the right category before your offer letter is drafted.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Management Consultant roles
Filtering by visa type and employer is faster than sorting through general job boards. Migrate Mate lets you search AbbVie's Management Consultant openings specifically by the visa categories they sponsor, saving you time on roles that won't lead anywhere.
Prepare for a longer onboarding window on H-1B transfers
If you're transferring an existing H-1B to AbbVie, USCIS portability rules allow you to start once the petition is filed rather than approved. Confirm with AbbVie's immigration team whether they file with premium processing to avoid gaps in work authorization.
Understand how F-1 OPT timing intersects with full-time offers
If you're on OPT, the 60-day gap between roles and the cap-gap period for H-1B transitions are real constraints AbbVie's legal team will need to plan around. Have your OPT end date and any STEM extension eligibility documented before your final interview round.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AbbVie sponsor H-1B visas for Management Consultants?
Yes, AbbVie sponsors H-1B visas for Management Consultant roles. The company works with immigration counsel to file petitions for qualifying candidates, including both cap-subject registrations and cap-exempt transfers. If you're already on an H-1B with another employer, AbbVie can file an H-1B transfer, which lets you begin work once the petition is received by USCIS.
Which visa types does AbbVie commonly sponsor for Management Consultant roles?
AbbVie sponsors a range of visa categories for this function, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, and TN visa for Canadian and Mexican professionals. They also support F-1 OPT and CPT for students, and J-1 visa in certain program contexts. Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3 are available for longer-term employees.
How do I apply for Management Consultant jobs at AbbVie?
Apply directly through AbbVie's careers portal, where you can filter by function and location. To find roles already filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, browse through Migrate Mate, which surfaces AbbVie's Management Consultant openings alongside the visa types they support. Tailor your application to reflect biopharma-specific consulting experience, particularly in areas like market access, portfolio strategy, or regulatory operations.
What qualifications does AbbVie expect for Management Consultant positions?
AbbVie typically looks for candidates with a graduate degree in business, life sciences, public health, or a related field, alongside demonstrated consulting experience in the pharmaceutical or healthcare sector. Familiarity with drug commercialization, health economics, or payer strategy is valued. Candidates coming from top-tier consulting firms with pharma practice groups or from internal strategy functions at other biopharma companies are well-positioned.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for a Management Consultant role at AbbVie?
Timeline depends heavily on your current status and the visa category you need. H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start, so roles accepted in late winter or early spring align best. E-3 and TN holders can typically start sooner given consular processing timelines of a few weeks. Raise your sponsorship needs early in the recruiting process so AbbVie's legal team can plan accordingly.
