About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About The Role
We are seeking a Security Engineering Manager to lead our Secure Frameworks Research team, which builds high-leverage security frameworks and libraries that make model development secure and prevent entire classes of vulnerabilities through careful design. You'll collaborate closely with teams and leaders across Anthropic to own critical security foundations, including cryptographic frameworks and secure serialization and authorization systems that empower teams to work securely without becoming security experts themselves.
Key Responsibilities
- Design frameworks and libraries that enable secure handling of sensitive data including model weights, customer data, and training datasets
- Own what you build completely; ensuring outstanding user experience, proactive monitoring, and responsive support
- Enable other teams to build their own security solutions by providing design pattern guidance and expanding security ownership beyond your team
- Partner with product, research, and infrastructure teams, as well as other Security teams to ensure frameworks integrate smoothly with lower-layer security controls
- Make strategic decisions about which frameworks to build based on security risk and translate into prioritized roadmaps
- Define success metrics around framework adoption and impact - the team succeeds when engineers naturally reach for Secure Frameworks' tools rather than building security solutions from scratch
- Manage and grow a team of engineers to deliver high-impact projects that balance security rigor with development velocity
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years managing security engineering teams with proven track record of team productivity
- 5+ years hands-on security and software engineering experience
- Deep expertise in securing complex architectures, threat modeling, and risk assessment with ability to evaluate security tradeoffs and make risk-based decisions
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, balancing security requirements with developer experience and velocity
- Clear and persuasive communicator in both writing and verbal settings
- Passionate about building diverse, high-performing teams and growing engineers in a fast-paced environment
- Low ego, high empathy, and have a track record as a talent magnet
- Experience working with technical internal customers
- Familiarity with AI safety concepts and frameworks
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary
$405,000—$485,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us.

How We're Different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

Align your credentials to AI research standards
Anthropic evaluates Engineering candidates on research depth, not just industry experience. Publications, open-source contributions to ML frameworks, or graduate-level work in AI safety signal the kind of specialty that strengthens a specialty occupation petition.
Target roles with clear degree field requirements
H-1B petitions require the role to qualify as a specialty occupation. Anthropic's infrastructure and research engineering roles typically map cleanly to computer science or related fields, but generalist titles with flexible degree requirements create friction at USCIS.
Search Anthropic's open roles on Migrate Mate
Filtering by visa type helps you identify Anthropic Engineering positions that fit your specific sponsorship category. Migrate Mate lets you browse open Engineering roles at Anthropic alongside sponsorship history for the function.
Start the offer conversation before the technical loop ends
Anthropic's hiring process for Engineering roles can move quickly once you clear initial screens. Raise your visa status early so the recruiting team can loop in legal before an offer is extended, avoiding delays at the filing stage.
Understand how E-3 and H-1B1 differ from H-1B processing
Australian and Singaporean nationals applying for E-3 or H-1B1 visa sponsorship skip the H-1B lottery entirely. Both categories allow consular processing with shorter lead times, which matters if you're timing a start date around a project or team need.
Prepare for DOL prevailing wage requirements upfront
Anthropic must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your role and location. Knowing which wage level your experience maps to helps you evaluate whether an offer is structured to clear LCA review.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Anthropic sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Anthropic sponsors H-1B visas for Engineering roles. The company's focus on AI research and model development means most Engineering positions qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards, which is the foundational requirement for H-1B eligibility. Sponsorship typically begins after a formal offer is extended, at which point Anthropic's legal team initiates the Labor Condition Application with the DOL.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Anthropic?
Applications go through Anthropic's careers page, where Engineering roles are listed by team and function. You can also browse open Engineering positions at Anthropic filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate. The process typically includes a recruiter screen, technical assessments focused on your domain, and a final loop with the hiring team. Flagging your visa status early in the process helps recruiting coordinate with immigration counsel before an offer is made.
Which visa types does Anthropic sponsor for Engineering roles?
Anthropic sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, and E-3 visas for Engineering positions. H-1B is the most broadly available category for international engineers. H-1B1 applies to nationals from Singapore, and E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens. Both H-1B1 and E-3 bypass the H-1B lottery, which can significantly simplify the timeline for eligible applicants.
What qualifications does Anthropic expect from Engineering candidates seeking sponsorship?
Anthropic's Engineering roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field. For roles in AI safety or research infrastructure, graduate-level experience or a strong publication record often strengthens your candidacy. USCIS requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, so roles with well-defined degree requirements in a specific field are the most straightforward to sponsor.
How do I think about timing when pursuing a sponsored Engineering role at Anthropic?
Timeline depends on which visa category applies to you. H-1B petitions are subject to the annual lottery, with a filing window in April and an October 1 start date at the earliest. E-3 and H-1B1 visa petitions can be filed at any time and processed at a U.S. consulate, which shortens the runway considerably. Premium processing through USCIS can reduce adjudication time to 15 business days for H-1B filings, which is worth raising with your recruiter if you have a time-sensitive start date.
