INTRODUCTION
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer with deep experience in AI/ML to join the Notebooks team. Datadog Notebooks provide a flexible tool for ad-hoc data analysis, collaborative investigations, and technical documentation. Its fluidity makes it an ideal surface for agents and humans to interact. The Notebook team is building AI-driven workflows for natural-language data analysis, assisted graph generation, automated investigations, and more. You will act as a technical leader in this domain, focused on building industry-leader AI-powered features. We’re looking for a product-minded ML engineer with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a track record of driving impactful initiatives end to end. At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships and collaboration it builds and the creativity it brings to the table. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our Datadogs can create a work-life harmony that best fits them.
What You’ll Do:
- Spearhead AI initiatives within Notebooks, serving as the technical owner for the design, development, and deployment of ML/AI-driven features.
- Shape the long-term technical direction and strategy for AI workflows within Notebooks and related products.
- Champion the full development cycle: from rapid prototyping and defining success metrics/evaluations to running experiments, iterating, and achieving production-ready scale and reliability.
- Drive product direction with a strong user focus, always advocating for the best end-user experience.
- Coordinate with other leaders and product teams interested in leveraging Notebooks in their AI-powered workflows.
- Develop robust agent systems, including tools, retrieval and planning strategies, guardrails, prompt management/evaluations, fallbacks, and human-in-the-loop processes.
- Stay up to date with industry trends, guiding the adoption of new technologies and evolving best-practices.
Who You Are:
- You have a BS/MS/PhD in a scientific field or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of relevant engineering experience, as well as experience acting as a technical lead
- Proven track record of leading large-scale AI/ML initiatives in a product-driven environment
- You have significant experience in model deployment, development, training, fine-tuning, and evaluation
- You are passionate about mentoring others and cultivating a high-performing engineering culture.
- You’re excited about leveraging AI tools to enhance how you code, solve problems, and build
Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you’re passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply.
Benefits and Growth:

Tips for Finding AI Engineer Jobs at Datadog
Align your portfolio to observability ML
Datadog's AI Engineer roles center on anomaly detection, log analysis, and LLM-powered workflows. Showcase projects involving time-series data, streaming inference, or retrieval-augmented generation to signal direct fit before your application reaches a recruiter.
Confirm LCA posting before accepting an offer
Before you sign, ask your recruiter whether the Labor Condition Application has been filed with DOL for your specific work location. Remote and hybrid roles sometimes complicate the prevailing wage determination, so get clarity early.
Target roles explicitly requesting ML infrastructure experience
Datadog posts AI Engineer positions across observability, APM, and platform teams. Roles tied to internal ML infrastructure or model serving pipelines tend to have clearer specialty occupation arguments, which strengthens an H-1B petition if you reach the filing stage.
Register for H-1B lottery in your final OPT year
If you're on F-1 OPT, USCIS only accepts H-1B registrations in March each year for an October 1 start. Missing one cycle means waiting a full year, so coordinate your job search timeline with Datadog's recruiting calendar to avoid a gap.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified AI Engineer openings at Datadog
Search Migrate Mate's job board to find AI Engineer roles at Datadog that are confirmed open to visa sponsorship, so you're not applying blind to postings that exclude international candidates.
Prepare for technical screens before discussing visa timeline
Datadog's interview process for AI Engineers typically runs through system design and ML fundamentals rounds before compensation and sponsorship come up. Clear the technical bar first, then raise filing timelines with the recruiter once you're in the offer stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Datadog sponsor H-1B visas for AI Engineers?
Yes, Datadog sponsors H-1B visas for AI Engineers. The company files petitions across multiple visa categories, and AI Engineer roles typically qualify as specialty occupations given the degree requirements in computer science, machine learning, or a related field. If you're on OPT, Datadog can also support your status while an H-1B petition is pending.
How do I apply for AI Engineer jobs at Datadog?
Apply directly through Datadog's careers page and filter by engineering or AI and machine learning. Before applying, tailor your resume to the specific team's focus, whether that's ML platform, observability AI, or LLM integrations. You can also browse open AI Engineer roles at Datadog confirmed for visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate to surface the right openings faster.
Which visa types does Datadog commonly use for AI Engineers?
Datadog sponsors H-1B and H-1B1 visas for most AI Engineer hires, along with TN visa status for Canadian and Mexican nationals. For candidates on F-1, the company works with both OPT and CPT. Longer-term, Datadog supports employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Datadog expect for AI Engineer roles?
Most AI Engineer postings at Datadog require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, machine learning, or a related technical field. Practical experience with ML frameworks, model deployment at scale, and distributed systems matters as much as credentials. Roles focused on LLM integration increasingly expect familiarity with RAG architectures, vector databases, and prompt engineering in production environments.
How do I time my application around visa filing deadlines?
If you're targeting H-1B sponsorship, USCIS opens registration in March for an October 1 cap-subject start date. Back-calculate from there: Datadog's full interview loop typically takes four to eight weeks, so starting outreach in November or December gives you enough runway to receive an offer before the registration window opens.
