Align Your Degree with the Department
Teaching Assistant roles at Long Island University are tied to specific academic departments. Your graduate degree needs to match the subject area you're applying to support, since specialty occupation requirements for H-1B and TN depend on that direct field alignment.
Start CPT or OPT Conversations Early
LIU's graduate programs frequently bring international students into TA roles through CPT or OPT. Contact your DSO before accepting any offer to confirm your authorization covers the specific hours and duties outlined in the position, since TA arrangements often blur full-time and part-time lines.
Find Open TA Roles Through Migrate Mate
Search Teaching Assistant openings at Long Island University on Migrate Mate to filter specifically for visa-sponsored positions. This saves time you'd otherwise spend cold-checking departmental listings across LIU's Brooklyn, Post, and other campuses.
Target Multi-Campus Departments with Enrollment Growth
LIU operates across several campuses with growing graduate cohorts. Departments managing large course loads in education, pharmacy, and health sciences are more likely to need TA support and have existing infrastructure for hiring international candidates through sponsored pathways.
Confirm LCA Wage Levels Before Accepting an Offer
For H-1B sponsorship, LIU must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying the offered wage meets prevailing levels for the role and location. Review the posted wage range against DOL prevailing wage data for Nassau or Brooklyn before you sign anything.
Build Your OPT Timeline Around the Academic Calendar
LIU's TA hiring cycles follow semester starts in August and January. If your OPT authorization or 60-day grace period ends mid-semester, your start date options narrow sharply. Map your work authorization end date against these windows before applying.

Find Teaching Assistant at Long Island University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Long Island University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching Assistants?
Yes, Long Island University sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching Assistant roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation. The role must require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the duties. LIU handles the USCIS petition and DOL Labor Condition Application filing, but the position and your credentials both need to satisfy the specialty occupation standard before sponsorship proceeds.
How do I apply for Teaching Assistant jobs at Long Island University?
Applications go through LIU's careers portal, though individual departments sometimes post TA openings separately through graduate program pages. You can also browse Teaching Assistant positions at Long Island University filtered by visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which surfaces relevant openings across LIU's campuses in one place. Reaching out directly to department coordinators for programs aligned with your field can also surface unlisted or upcoming TA openings.
Which visa types are commonly used for Teaching Assistant roles at Long Island University?
F-1 OPT and CPT are the most common pathways for international students already enrolled at or recently graduated from a U.S. university. H-1B sponsorship is available for roles that meet specialty occupation requirements, and TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying fields. The right visa depends on your nationality, current status, and how the specific TA role is structured.
What qualifications does Long Island University expect for Teaching Assistant positions?
Most TA roles at LIU require enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program. Departments typically want candidates with strong academic standing in the subject area, and some roles in health sciences or education require field-specific credentials or certifications. For H-1B eligibility, your degree must align directly with the duties of the role, so generalist graduate degrees may not always satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements.
How do I time my application around the H-1B cap and LIU's hiring cycle?
LIU's TA hiring peaks before the fall semester in August and the spring semester in January. H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start, so a spring TA offer would require bridging status through OPT or another authorization until October. If you're already in H-1B status or cap-exempt through a previous filing, timing constraints ease considerably. Plan your application at least one full semester ahead to align offers with your authorization window.
