INTRODUCTION
Molex possesses a rich heritage in the optical industry, delivering high-performance, field-proven optical solutions spanning components, modules, and fully integrated line cards. We provide cutting-edge wavelength management and amplifier technologies, supported by deep optical, mechanical, electrical, and software integration capabilities. These strengths enable Molex to serve the evolving needs of high-density, high-bandwidth, and flexible optical networks.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Principal Mechanical Engineer will own mechanical designs of advanced optoelectronic packages (e.g., CPO, ELSFP). This role is responsible for all elements of mechanical design that relate to component design, manufacturability and long-term reliability. The position requires close collaboration with R&D and product design teams, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to ensure laser components meet stringent optical, mechanical, and Telcordia reliability requirements.
What you will do:
- Lead mechanical design and layout of laser diode packages and various subcomponents
- Design and optimize optical subassemblies (laser, lens system, isolator/grating, fiber coupling) to achieve submicron alignment with high coupling efficiency and long-term stability
- Develop package architectures integrating thermal electric coolers, submounts, hermetic housings, lids, getters, and fiber attach features
- Ensure compatibility with active alignment processes, including fixture design, alignment tolerancing, and drift control during solder reflow or epoxy cure
- Perform thermal and mechanical design analysis: FEA, thermal modeling and evaluate impact on wavelength shift
- Design for high thermal power density and ensure adequate thermal margin
- Design for hermetic sealing approaches meeting leak rate targets
- Select and qualify materials and attachment methods
- Partner with suppliers to evaluate component capability, process maturity, and long-term reliability risks
- Drive design-for-manufacturability (DFM) to enable high-yield, scalable production
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What You Will Have (Basic requirements):
- Masters in Mechanical Engineering
- At least 10+ years of industry R&D experience with mechanical design of fiber-coupled optoelectronic packages developed and transferred to manufacturing environments
- Demonstrated experience with optical alignment of components to submicron tolerances, designing for high thermal power density
- Proven ability to design for submicron stability over life
- Mechanical design using Mech software package/s with finite element analysis (FEA)
- Strong background in FEA modeling to calculate stress/design from CTE mismatch, optic misalignment, thermal limits, etc.
- Knowledgeable of various optical components (e.g., gratings, mirrors, lenses), stable attachment methods (e.g., epoxy and solder based)
- Knowledgeable in component qualification methodologies
- Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) methodology: design, verification, qualification, release to manufacturing
- Strong communication skills with suppliers, customers, and cross-functional internal teams
COMPENSATION
For this role, we anticipate paying $180,000 - $250,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.

Tailor your resume to Molex's manufacturing context
Molex hires Mechanical Technicians for connector and electronic component production lines. Highlight experience with automated assembly equipment, precision tooling, or quality inspection processes rather than general mechanical skills that don't map to their manufacturing environment.
Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires H-1B roles to qualify as specialty occupations. Gather transcripts, degree equivalency evaluations, and professional certifications upfront so your employer's immigration attorney can build a strong petition before your application moves forward.
Clarify OPT or CPT authorization before your interview
If you're on F-1 status, confirm your OPT start date and STEM extension eligibility before offer discussions. Molex can use your OPT period to assess fit before committing to H-1B sponsorship, so knowing your exact authorization window helps frame the conversation clearly.
Search open Mechanical Technician roles through Migrate Mate
Molex posts Mechanical Technician openings across multiple facilities. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles at Molex that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're not wasting time on listings that won't support your immigration status.
Understand how PERM labor certification affects your timeline
If Molex pursues an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathway for you, DOL's PERM process requires documenting a recruitment effort before filing. This can add over a year to your permanent residency timeline, so ask your hiring contact early whether the role is eligible.
Address the H-1B cap lottery timing with your offer team
H-1B cap registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you receive a Molex offer outside that window, ask whether a TN visa or a cap-exempt filing pathway applies to bridge the gap while lottery results are pending.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Molex sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Technicians?
Yes, Molex sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Technician roles. To qualify, the position must meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard, which typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree or its equivalent in experience. Candidates should confirm with the hiring team which specific roles are designated for sponsorship, as not every open position will qualify.
How do I apply for Mechanical Technician jobs at Molex?
You can browse and apply for Mechanical Technician openings at Molex through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship eligibility so you can identify roles suited to your immigration status. Once you locate a role, apply directly through Molex's careers portal and note your work authorization situation clearly in the application or cover materials.
Which visa types does Molex commonly use for Mechanical Technician roles?
Molex sponsors Mechanical Technicians under several visa categories, including H-1B for qualified degree holders, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in active academic programs, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technical occupations, and J-1 visa for internship or training placements. Green Card pathways via EB-2 or EB-3 may follow extended employment.
What qualifications does Molex expect for Mechanical Technician candidates seeking sponsorship?
Molex typically looks for candidates with an associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial technology, combined with hands-on experience in precision manufacturing, electromechanical assembly, or equipment maintenance. Familiarity with quality management systems and production floor environments strengthens your application, particularly for roles supporting connector or component manufacturing lines.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Mechanical Technician at Molex?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B sponsorship is tied to the annual cap lottery, meaning employment can't start before October 1 following a March registration. TN and F-1 OPT transfers move faster, often within weeks of an offer. EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways through PERM require DOL recruitment documentation and can take over a year before USCIS adjudication begins.
