JOB DESCRIPTION
Are you a passionate and innovative thermal engineer looking to help develop state-of-the-art AI and aircraft products? Are you eager to make a positive difference in the world? Do you want to work alongside mission-driven and values-focused teammates? Shield AI is just the place for you!
As a Thermal Engineer at Shield AI, you will own the design, analysis, and integration of thermal management systems for the launch and recovery system structural and electronics components. This role is best suited for an engineer who thrives on first-principles problem solving, is comfortable with ambiguous, open-ended challenges, and can communicate well across functions, ensuring well-coordinated thermal management solutions.
You’ll work across disciplines to ensure structural integrity, manufacturability, and mission-readiness in one of the most advanced autonomous aircraft platforms being built today. This role is ideal for an experienced thermal engineer who thrives in fast-paced, high-ownership environments and is passionate about building systems that matter.
What you'll do:
- Own thermal solutions for the autonomous aircraft launch and recovery system
- Develop and validate analytical, numerical, and computational models for heat transfer and fluid flow using hand calculations and CFD tools such as FloEFD.
- Prototype, test, and iterate mechanism designs for functionality and reliability
- Provide technical leadership in trade studies, system architecture decisions, and risk assessments.
- Drive test planning, instrumentation, and data analysis to correlate models with experimental results.
- Proactively identify risks, propose solutions, and influence mechanical, electrical and/or PCBA design direction.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, avionics, flight controls, manufacturing, and test teams
- Support pre-production builds, prototype integration, and ground/flight testing on the pathway to production and field deployment
- Participate in design reviews, architecture discussions, and technical decision-making forums related to structural systems.
- Identify opportunities to improve design processes, configuration management, and team workflows for increased engineering velocity and design quality.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related discipline.
- 2+ years of professional experience in thermal engineering.
- Strong expertise in heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and fluid mechanics.
- Strong understanding of active and passive cooling solutions and their integration at component and system level.
- Understanding of thermal management design elements including TIMs, spreaders, heat sinks, vapor chambers, heat pipes, and fans.
- Proficiency with thermal analysis and CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS Icepak, FloEFD, STAR-CCM+).
- Experience with CAD design tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or similar.
- Demonstrated experience applying first-principles reasoning to complex engineering problems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to learn and adapt quickly to new tools, processes, and technical challenges in a fast-paced, startup environment.
- A demonstrated record of working hard, being trustworthy, holding yourself to high standards, and being kind to others.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- M.S. in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Hands-on experience with thermal and fluid system testing, instrumentation, and validation.
- Knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods relevant to thermal management.
- MIL-STD-810, structural, or actuated mechanism testing experience.
- Ability to thrive in startup, R&D, or defense innovation environments.
COMPENSATION
- Salary Range: $88,000 - $129,998 a year
Full-time regular employee offer package:
Pay within range listed + Bonus + Benefits + Equity
Temporary employee offer package:
Pay within range listed above + temporary benefits package (applicable after 60 days of employment)
Salary compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, licenses and certifications, and specific work location. All offers are contingent on a cleared background and possible reference check. Military fellows and part-time employees are not eligible for benefits. Target roles that align with cleared or clearable positions
Shield AI operates in defense technology, where many roles require U.S. security clearances. Focus on technical positions where you can obtain a clearance, such as software engineering or autonomy research, as these are most likely to receive sponsorship consideration.
Emphasize highly specialized technical skills
Shield AI builds autonomous systems for defense applications. Candidates with expertise in machine learning, robotics, embedded systems, or aerospace engineering are stronger sponsorship candidates because their skills are genuinely difficult to source domestically.
Understand the visa types Shield AI has sponsored
Shield AI has sponsored Green Cards, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and J-1 visas. If you're on OPT or CPT, you're already within their sponsorship scope, make that a clear part of your application and early conversations with recruiters.
Raise sponsorship early in the recruiter conversation
Defense employers often have longer hiring timelines due to clearance and compliance processes. Bring up your visa status in the initial recruiter screen rather than waiting, this avoids late-stage surprises and lets the team plan accordingly.
Position yourself for permanent residency pathways
Shield AI has sponsored Green Cards, including EB-2 and EB-3 categories. If long-term U.S. residency is your goal, ask specifically about their Green Card sponsorship policy during the offer stage, not after you've started.
Find Shield AI's sponsored roles through verified sponsorship data
Not every open role at Shield AI will lead to sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your applications on positions where sponsorship is an established practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shield AI sponsor H-1B visas?
Based on available sponsorship data, Shield AI has not filed H-1B visa petitions in recent periods. The company has sponsored other work authorization pathways including F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN visas, and Green Cards. If H-1B visa sponsorship is essential to your situation, clarify this directly with Shield AI's recruiting team before advancing in the process.
What visa types does Shield AI sponsor?
Shield AI has sponsored F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and J-1 visas for work authorization, along with EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card categories for permanent residency. This makes them a viable option for international candidates already in the U.S. on student or treaty-based status, particularly those pursuing long-term residency.
Which departments or roles at Shield AI are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at Shield AI is concentrated in highly technical disciplines. Software engineering, machine learning, autonomy systems, and aerospace engineering roles are the strongest candidates, given the company's core focus on AI-powered defense platforms. Roles requiring niche expertise that is scarce domestically have historically been more sponsorship-eligible across the defense technology sector.
How do I find open roles at Shield AI that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you browse and filter jobs at verified sponsoring employers, including Shield AI, so you can see roles where sponsorship is part of the company's established hiring practice. This saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a role won't support your visa status.
How do I approach the application timeline at Shield AI given their defense industry hiring process?
Defense technology companies often have longer hiring cycles than standard tech employers, partly due to background checks and security clearance assessments. Plan for a process that can stretch several weeks to months from application to offer. Disclose your visa status at the first recruiter contact so the team can confirm sponsorship eligibility before investing time on both sides.
