Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Teaching roles at universities qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations, but your degree must directly relate to the subject you'll be teaching. A mismatch between your field of study and the course you're hired to teach is a common RFE trigger.
Target departments with recurring international hires
STEM, business, and social science departments at large research universities like USC historically hire international faculty at higher rates. Search DOL LCA disclosure data by employer name to identify which USC departments have filed for Teaching roles in your field.
Apply before the academic hiring cycle closes
University Teaching searches typically open in the fall for positions starting the following academic year. Missing this window often means waiting twelve months for the next cycle, which matters significantly if your OPT or J-1 status has a fixed end date.
Clarify sponsorship intent before the offer stage
USC's HR and international services offices handle sponsorship separately from hiring departments. Confirming that the department has budgeted for USCIS filing fees and legal counsel before you reach the offer stage prevents late-stage complications that derail timelines.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Teaching openings by visa type
Searching broadly across job boards wastes time on roles that won't sponsor. Migrate Mate lets you filter Teaching positions at USC specifically by the visa types they support, so you only spend energy on openings where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Account for PERM timelines if pursuing permanent residence
EB-2 and EB-3 green card pathways for Teaching roles require USCIS-supervised PERM labor certification, which DOL currently processes over many months. If permanent residence is your goal, raise this with USC's international office early so the process starts before your nonimmigrant status runs short.

Find Teaching at University of South Carolina JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of South Carolina sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, University of South Carolina sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions. To be eligible, the role must meet USCIS specialty occupation standards, meaning it requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the duties. USC's Office of International Support Services coordinates the filing process with an immigration attorney on the university's behalf.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at University of South Carolina?
Applications are submitted through USC's official careers portal, where Teaching openings are listed by college and department. You'll typically need a CV, cover letter, teaching philosophy statement, and references. For positions requiring sponsorship, it helps to note your visa status early in the process so the hiring department can confirm sponsorship eligibility before extending an offer. Migrate Mate also aggregates USC Teaching roles filtered by sponsorship type, which can simplify your search.
Which visa types does University of South Carolina commonly use for Teaching roles?
USC sponsors several visa categories for Teaching positions depending on the candidate's background and role type. H-1B is the most common pathway for long-term faculty and instructional staff. J-1 is frequently used for visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and short-term teaching appointments. F-1 OPT and CPT apply to current international students working in Teaching-adjacent capacities, and TN is available to qualifying Canadian and Mexican nationals in eligible academic roles.
What qualifications does University of South Carolina expect for Teaching positions?
Requirements vary by level and department, but tenure-track and lecturer positions typically require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, which is usually a Ph.D. or equivalent. For H-1B sponsorship specifically, USCIS requires the degree to be directly related to the subject matter being taught. Teaching experience, a record of scholarly activity, and a strong teaching portfolio are standard expectations across most USC academic departments.
How do I plan my timeline if I need sponsorship for a Teaching role at USC?
Academic hiring timelines and visa processing timelines need to align carefully. Most faculty searches conclude by spring, with start dates in August or September. If you need an H-1B, USC must file by April 1 for the October 1 cap-subject start date. J-1 and TN sponsorship can move faster and are not subject to the annual cap, which gives more scheduling flexibility for non-tenure-track or visiting Teaching appointments.
