Controller Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a controller in Alabama?
Most controller roles in Alabama require a CPA license issued or recognized by the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy, along with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. Candidates typically build toward the role through progressive staff and senior accountant positions, then move into an assistant controller role before stepping up. Strong knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, and ERP systems makes candidates significantly more competitive in Alabama's manufacturing and healthcare-heavy market.
Which companies hire controllers in Alabama?
Employers hiring controllers in Alabama right now include Encompass Health, Landscape Workshop, and OFI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Alabama's mix of defense contractors, regional banks, and large hospital systems means controller openings appear across a wide range of industries rather than clustering in one sector.
Which Alabama cities have the most controller jobs?
Birmingham, Mobile, and Huntsville lead Alabama for controller openings. Birmingham drives the largest share as the state's financial and healthcare hub, with major hospital systems and regional banks headquartered there, while Huntsville's defense and aerospace contractors generate consistent demand for controllers with government contract and cost accounting experience.
Are there remote controller jobs in Alabama?
Yes, though they're less common than in purely analytical finance roles, since controllers often need to be on-site for audits, close processes, and team oversight. About 9% of controller openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with hybrid schedules more prevalent than fully remote. The parts of the role most suited to remote work include financial reporting, analysis, and system-based reconciliations.
How can I get hired as a controller in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a staff accountant role at a large Alabama employer and building toward the controller title over several years. Birmingham-area hospital systems like UAB Health System and large manufacturers in the Huntsville corridor regularly hire new accounting graduates into rotational or development programs. Earning your CPA license early and gaining ERP system experience in a staff or senior accountant role are the credentials that most consistently open the door to assistant controller and eventually controller positions.
Where can I find and apply to controller jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to controller jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
