Controller Jobs in Delaware: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a controller in Delaware?
Most controller roles in Delaware require a CPA license issued or recognized through the Delaware State Board of Accountancy, which follows the Uniform CPA Examination and requires a bachelor's degree with qualifying accounting credits. Beyond licensure, employers typically expect several years of progressive experience in public accounting or corporate finance, with exposure to financial close processes, consolidations, and internal controls. Strong candidates often move up from senior accountant or accounting manager roles within Delaware's financial services or corporate sectors.
Which companies hire controllers in Delaware?
Companies currently hiring controllers in Delaware include JPMorganChase, Asplundh Tree Expert, and Jobot, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Delaware's concentration of financial holding companies and corporate headquarters in the Wilmington area makes it one of the more active states for senior accounting and controller talent.
Which Delaware cities have the most controller jobs?
Newark, Wilmington, and Bear are the Delaware cities with the most controller openings. Wilmington dominates because it is home to major bank holding companies, credit card issuers, and corporate legal headquarters, while Dover draws from state government and regional healthcare institutions, and Newark benefits from proximity to large research and manufacturing employers anchored near the University of Delaware.
Are there remote controller jobs in Delaware?
Yes, and more than many finance roles, since controller work is largely analytical and systems-based rather than tied to a physical location. About 0% of controller openings tied to Delaware are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how widely finance teams have adopted flexible arrangements. Technical accounting, financial reporting, and ERP oversight are the functions most commonly offered with remote or hybrid flexibility.
How can I get hired as a controller in Delaware with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff or senior accountant role at one of Delaware's large corporate employers or a regional public accounting firm, where exposure to month-end close and financial reporting builds the foundation employers expect in a controller. Firms serving Wilmington's financial services sector regularly hire candidates out of accounting programs, including those at the University of Delaware and Delaware State University. Sitting for the CPA exam early gives candidates a measurable edge, and lateral moves from roles like financial analyst, accounting manager, or internal auditor are common stepping stones into first-time controller positions.
Where can I find and apply to controller jobs in Delaware?
You can find and apply to controller jobs in Delaware on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
