Tips for Your Development Coordinator Job Search
Tailor your resume to the sector
Development coordinator roles in nonprofits emphasize donor stewardship and gift processing, while those in higher education focus on alumni relations and annual giving campaigns. Mirror the exact language in each posting so your resume reflects the sector's priorities, not a generic version of the role.
Highlight database and CRM fluency
Most development coordinator postings require hands-on experience with donor management systems like Raiser's Edge, Salesforce Nonprofit, or DonorPerfect. Name the specific platforms you've used and describe what you did in them, whether that's running reports, managing gift entry, or building constituent records.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists development coordinator openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify fundraising support contributions
Hiring managers want to see impact even in a coordinator role. Instead of saying you assisted with campaigns, write that you helped process a specific volume of donations during an annual fund drive or coordinated a certain number of cultivation events in a fiscal year.
Prepare for a writing or data task
Many development teams use a practical exercise during interviews, asking you to draft a donor acknowledgment letter, clean a sample data set, or respond to a grant inquiry. Reviewing actual acknowledgment letters and grant reports before your interview will help you speak confidently to both writing and data skills.
Follow up with a thank-you that references the mission
A post-interview note that connects your enthusiasm to the organization's specific fundraising goals or community impact lands differently than a generic thank-you. Reference one detail from the conversation and tie it back to why you want to support their development work.
Development Coordinator Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most development coordinators?
The companies hiring the most development coordinators right now include Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Fort Worth Independent School District, and Emory University, with the largest share of openings in Texas, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Nonprofits, universities, and health systems consistently account for the majority of postings in this role.
How many development coordinator jobs are remote?
About 10% of development coordinator openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though on-site roles remain common given the event coordination and in-person donor engagement responsibilities involved. Sub-areas focused on grant writing, donor communications, and database management tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How do you become a development coordinator?
Most development coordinators start with a bachelor's degree in a field like communications, public administration, or nonprofit management, then gain experience through internships, volunteer coordination, or administrative roles at nonprofits or educational institutions. Building proficiency in a donor database platform, practicing gift acknowledgment writing, and pursuing a Certified Fund Raising Executive credential over time will strengthen your candidacy significantly.
Can you get a development coordinator job with little or no experience?
Yes, many entry-level development coordinator postings accept candidates who have volunteer coordination, event planning, or administrative experience even if it was not in a formal fundraising role. Highlighting any exposure to donor communications, data entry, or nonprofit operations, and demonstrating familiarity with a CRM platform, helps offset limited direct development experience in your application.
What does the development coordinator interview process look like?
The interview process for a development coordinator role typically includes an initial phone or video screen with HR, followed by one or two interviews with the development director or a broader team. Many organizations add a practical exercise such as drafting a donor acknowledgment letter, editing a grant report excerpt, or walking through how you would clean a data set before a hiring decision is made.
Where can I find and apply to development coordinator jobs?
You can find and apply to development coordinator jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your background and apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
